Farm camp organised

Khamano, September 11
The Agriculture Department organised a farm camp at Badla village, near here, to apprise the farmers of the area about the latest technology in agriculture and to solve their problems.

Agriculture specialist Darbara Singh told the farmers about the importance of Gobar gas plant in houses which is cheap and safe.

According to Sri Kumar, the expenditure on agriculture can decreased with proper testing of soil.

In his address, Jaswinder Singh, ADO, Khamano, informed the farmers about the pollution caused by burning paddy straw. The speakers also spoke about decrease in the level of water and appealed to the farmers to adopt crop diversification.

A large number of farmers were present on the occasion.

PAUTA welcomes UGC decision

Ludhiana, September 11
The Punjab Agricultural University Teachers’ Association (PAUTA) has welcomed the decision of University Grants Commission (UGC) to constitute a committee headed by Professor G.K. Chadha, member, economic advisory council to the Prime Minister, to review the pay scales of teachers in the universities and colleges across  the country.

PAUTA executive said the revised pay scales were due on January, 2006. They appealed to the newly appointed committee to deliberate and give its recommendations at the earliest. The PAUTA executive will be putting up its case for a special pay package to agricultural universities scientists in view of their nature of work and extra years put in for acquiring basic qualification to get employment in the agricultural universities.

Teachers honoured

The PAUTA honoured 17 teachers, who retired from the university service last year here on Monday. PAU vice- chancellor Dr M.S. Kang was the chief guest of the function.

Dr M.A. Zahir, a scholar and former dean of the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, gave a lecture on “Teacher as a Role Model” on this occasion. Highlighting the qualities of a teacher, Dr Zahir said a teacher should inculcate good habits among his students in order to bring the desired change in the society. “A teacher should be friendly in order to motivate and inspire his students,” he added.

Addressing the PAU faculty, Dr M.S. Kang said ideal class room teaching should contain qualities of three M’s - meaningful, motivational and memorable. He congratulated PAUTA for organising this function.

Quiz for journalism students

The students of post graduate diploma in agricultural journalism and mass communication, PAU, won a quiz named ‘Jawab Theek Hai’ organised by the Doordarshan Kendra, Jalandhar. Surinder Seth, the veteran quiz master, hosted the show. The theme was ‘Doordarshan’ as September 15 is the Doordarshan Day that marked its beginning in 1959.

Aditya Wadhwa and Jaspreet Kaur were the winners of the quiz. Rubina Jain and Sukhaman Pal followed by Sheetal Chawla and Jackwinder Singh were the first and second runners up respectively.

The 10 rounds of the quiz were based on popular programmes, technical information and general awareness regarding Doordarshan programmes. The programme will be telecast at 5.30 pm on September 14, on DD Punjabi and DD, Jalandhar.

Sonika is Miss Fresher

A talent hunt show was organised at Arya College for Women here today. Dr S.M.Sharma, Principal of the college was the chief guest. Sukhsham Ahluwalia, in charge of co-curricular activities, with the efforts of other staff members organised the show. Students displayed their talent in different items like folk song, skit, poetical recitation, solo dance etc. Reena and Rachna were the judges of the show.

A freshers’ contest was also organised on the occasion. Sonika won the Miss Fresher title. Rupali was declared first runner-up while Neha was the second runner-up. Suksham Ahluwalia accorded the vote of thanks.

Campus placement

IBM Daksh, a leading BPO company, conducted campus placement interviews at GGN Khalsa College here today. A four-member team led by Varun Sharma, assistant manager, HR Department of the company conducted the process.

The team was accorded a warm welcome by principal Dr T.S. Anand, who exhorted the students to participate in such activities

A large number of students belonging to various streams like BA, B.Sc, B.Com, PGDCA and other postgraduate classes participated in the programme. After five gruelling rounds, five students were selected and given letter of intent by IBM Daksh.

Installation ceremony

Nominated and elected office-bearers of the Central Students Association in Master Tara Singh College for Women were felicitated here yesterday. Those honoured at the installation ceremony include head girl Mukta Sharma, deputy head girl Isha Sehgal, president Harpreet, secretary Neeru and joint secretary Ritu Nagpal along with their team.

This was followed by a solemn resolve to rededicate themselves for the emotional oneness and harmony of the people of India regardless of caste, region, religion or language.

Principal Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota called upon the students to join hands in the crusade against violence and resolve all differences through dialogue. She exhorted students to follow Constitutional means without resorting to violence. She congratulated all office-bearers for their respective posts and reminded them of the responsibility.

Declamation contest

The Commerce and Management club of Kamla Lohtia SD College, set up under the convenership of Dr Sarita Aggarwal, organised its first declamation contest here today.

Prof Rajesh Marawaha, head of the department of commerce welcomed the principal, judges and other dignitaries. 30 students participated in the contest and expressed their views on the topics like "Environmental degradation and economic development", "Role of women entrepreneurs in development of India", "Population as a growth promoting factor". Dr Shiv Mohan Sharma, Prof Jaspreet Kaur and Deepak Dhingra were the judges.

Principal Deepak Kaushal appreciated the efforts of Prof Rajesh Marwaha and his team members for the organising such activities. Neha of BBA-I won the first prize, the second prize was bagged by Varun Narula of B.Com-III while the third prize was bagged by Arneet Kaur of BBA-II.

The winners were presented mementos and certificates were given to all participants by the principal. Dr Sarita Aggarwal presented the vote of thanks.

MBBS 2003 batch wins quiz

The team of MBBS 2003 batch, comprising Suvir Singh and Ankur Wadhera, won the third annual pharmacology quiz - Pharmiz 2007, which was organised by the department of pharmacology in Christian Medical College (CMC) here last evening. Dr John Abraham, principal, CMC, inaugurated the quiz.

Dr AP Dadhich, professor and head, department of pharmacology, welcomed the chief guest, faculty and students on the occasion. He said this audio-visual treat was an important fun-filled academic activity.

The participating teams were selected from all MBBS batches of CMC through a preliminary round held on September 7. All the rounds were conducted using multimedia programme, designed by the department.

Dr Dinesh Badyal, reader of the department, highlighted the history of the medicine and the Nobel Prizes in medicine.

The quiz was conducted in six rounds. The winners were given certificates and prizes by the CMC principal, who also presided over the concluding function. Dr Ashish Maseeh gave a vote of thanks on the behalf of the department.
