Medical camp on breast cancer today

Ludhiana, September 11
The Krishna Breast Cancer Care Charitable Trust, in association with Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), will hold a free check-up camp and awareness lecture on breast cancer at Lakshmi Ladies Club here tomorrow.

Prominent oncologists and oncological surgeons of the region, including Dr G.S. Brar and Dr D.S. Sidhu, will conduct the screening and deliver lectures to stress on the need for early detection of breast cancer. Harsimrat Kaur, dietician from the DMCH, will provide guidance on the diet programme to be adopted to avoid health-related problems.

The lecture will be followed by low-calorie microwave cooking demonstration by IFB for the benefit of the club members.

According to Sanjeev Arora, a member of the trust, the awareness lecture will focus on the significance of early detection of breast cancer since timely intervention could lead to almost cent per cent cure.

The doctors will also provide guidance on "breast self-examination" (BSE) and its importance as it helps women detect any changes occurring in the breasts and seek timely medical assistance.

IMA gives clean chit to doctors

The Punjab unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) today gave a clean chit to doctors of Khanna Nursing Home, who had been accused of causing death due to negligence.

In a statement, Dr O.P.S Kande, chairman of the legal cell of the IMA, said Amarjit Singh Dang was suffering from kidney stones and pus in the kidney. The kidney was not functioning and therefore, it had to be removed.

A laboratory in Patiala had confirmed the kidney had cancer and was useless.

The police had booked three doctors of the nursing home following an agitation held by relatives of Amarjit Singh, alleging that the doctors had administered wrong treatment and it was due to their negligence, that he had died.

Dr Kande made an appeal to the public that in case of any grievance, they should take up the matter at the appropriate level.

The police had registered a case against Dr Ranjit Singh, Dr Dharampal and Dr Nitin Aggarwal.

German fellowship for city doctor

Dr Harpreet S. Gill, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, here has been invited to Germany for a one-month fellowship in joint replacement surgery. The Johnson and Johnson foreign fellowship for 2006-07 was awarded to Dr Gill by the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA).

A large number of members of Sutlej Club and their dependents participated in the two-day swimming competition, which concluded on Sunday.

Priyank Bharti, additional deputy commissioner (development), Ludhiana, gave away prizes to the winners.

Boys (under 6 years) tube race: First - Arman Bhakoo, Second - Harry Ahuja.

Girls (9 to 10 years) 25m breast stroke: First - Ashma Malhotra, Second -Raunak.

Boys (10 to 12 years) 25m breast stroke: First - Prabhdeepak Singh, Second - Mitash Jain.

50 m breast stroke: First - Mukul, Second - Dhron Kanish.

100m breast stroke: First - Bharat Bansal, Second - Himanshu Kumar.

Ludhiana beat Ferozepur

Ludhiana, September 11
Ludhiana beat Ferozepur in the first match of the Punjab state inter- district women's cricket knock-out tournament played at the Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, here today.

Resuming their first innings at 95 for 6, Ferozepur were all out for 102 runs in 45.4 overs. After Harmanpreet Kaur was at 61 today, the remaining girls failed to stand the ground. Ludhiana, in the first innings had made 158 runs.

For Ludhiana, Nidhi performed well, capturing four wickets for 32, followed by Priya who took three for 19 runs. Rajinder Kaur grabbed two wickets for 16 and Sukhwinder Kaur took one wicket.

In the second innings, Ludhiana were 238 runs for the loss of 3 wickets after 63 overs. Aman and Sukhwinder Kaur remained unbeaten on 73 and 56 respectively. Anuradha scored 55 runs while Rajinder Kaur made 13.

In the second match, Ludhiana will take on Amritsar at Amritsar on September 13 and 14.
