Bhutto wants to bring bullet-proof vehicle

Karachi, September 15
Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has moved the Sindh High Court for permission to import a bullet-proof vehicle for travelling in Pakistan on her planned return next month.

A petition on the behalf of Pakistan People’s Party leader was submitted to the Chief Justice by her attorney Senator Farooq H. Naek and counsel Adnan Karim on Thursday saying a threat to her and her family members’ security and safety could not be ruled out.

They also sought an urgent preliminary hearing in chambers. Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed advised the advocates to file the petition in office for hearing on September 18.

Justice Sabihuddin wanted the petition be taken up in open court because of its importance.

The PPP leader has announced that she will return to Pakistan on October 18 after spending eight years in self-exile.

In view of the alarming incidents of suicide bombing, firing, kidnapping and the overall law and order situation in the country, the petition said she needed a bullet-proof vehicle for travelling in Pakistan, the Daily Times reported.

Bhutto had written to the Sindh home secretary for the necessary permission. However, there had been no response from the government, it claimed.

Being the chairperson of the country’s most popular party, the petition said, she would have to travel widely to conduct the party’s election campaign. — PTI
