14 undertrials escape in Goa

Fourteen undertrials escaped during Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations here last night. The four also assaulted four jail guards in Margao judicial lock-up before fleeing off, the police said today.

An intensive combing operation has been launched to nab the undertrials who escaped when they were brought out of their cell to participate in Ganesh festival prayers, said the police adding that of the 14, six were being tried in connection with murder, robbery and dacoity.

The jail authorities informed the police about the incident only this morning, resulting in delay in search operation.

Superintendent of Police, Shekhar Prabhudesai said, “We got an intimation in the morning and immediately the search operation was initiated.” — PTI
