DMCH doctor gets global award
Ludhiana, September 17 At the meet, Dr Sobti presented a paper on sexual abuse in children and reported prevalence of a startling 34 per cent among the study group. Her paper highlighted the need for the parents to be aware of the vulnerability of growing boys and girls to childhood sexual abuse and not to hesitate to communicate to their children, the difference between “good touch” and “bad touch”. Dr Sobti stated that the department of pediatrics had introduced the “green page” in its undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, which would stresses on the working up of the environmental history of the children. In this context, a workshop on “Child environmental health” would be organised under the aegis of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and the WHO here in January which will have Dr Ruth A. Etzel, chairperson of the Pediatric Environmental Health Leadership Institute, and Dr Jenny Pronczuk Garbino from the WHO as the faculty. |

350 patients examined
Ludhiana, September 17 According to Dr Surendra Gupta, secretary, NIMA, free ECG was performed on 125 patients afflicted with heart ailments. Twenty-five patients were selected for providing free echo cardiography and 15 cases of prostate enlargement were selected for free investigations and subsidised surgery to be conducted at Deep Hospital. A team of doctors, comprising Dr Kulwant Singh, Dr Vikas Gupta, Dr B.K. Gupta, Dr Sarbjit, Dr Inder, Dr Surendra Gupta, Dr Rajesh Thapar, Dr Ranbir Singh, Dr Diwaker Sharma, Dr Kuldip Kharbanda, Dr Anil Arora, Dr Jagdev Kehal, Dr Sunil Sharma, Dr Ritu Sharma, Dr Gursharanjit Kaur and Dr Sonia Uppal, examined the patients. Interacting with the patients and attending doctors, Dr Kulwant Singh stressed upon the need for the medical professionals to reach-out to the masses and make medical care accessible to the needy and poor, particularly the rural and urban slum-dwellers. According to Dr Surendra Gupta, with these two camps, the NIMA had organised 41 free medical camps during the past two years. This was in addition to organising workshops and seminars for integrated doctors in the city. |

Ludhiana eves emerge champ
Ludhiana, September 17 In a ding dong battle in the women's section, Ludhiana after trailing, made a fine comeback to overpower Jalandhar 66-62. Playing an attacking game, Jalandhar eves were leading (11-10) at the end of the first quarter. They went on to increase the lead by nine points (32-23) at the half time and even at the end of the third quarter, Jalandhar players were enjoying lead of seven points (47-40). In the fourth and deciding quarter, Ludhiana exhibited great depth and mobility in their attacks which rendered Jalandhar eves helpless. Ludhiana, not wiped out the defecit but went ahead to clinch the cliff-hanger with a narrow margin of four points (66-62). For Ludhiana, internationals, Kiranjit Kaur and Kamaljit Kaur accounted for 20 and 17 points, respectively. Paramjit and Rajanpal countributed 10 points each while Manpreet Kaur chipped in with five points. Sarabjit Kaur (21), Jyoti Bala (15), Rajaninder Kaur (11) and Raman (10) fought well for the losers. In the men’s section, Rest of Punjab outplayed the BSF, Jalandhar 71-61. The winners were leading 34-29 at half time. For the winners, main scorers were Jagdeep and Gagandeep who netted 32 and 12 points, respectively. Dilawar scored nine points while Mandeep and Pawandeep contributed six and five points. International Vipin Kumar played exceedingly well for the losers contributing 17 points. He was ably assisted by Ashik and Surjit who scored 16 and six points, respectively. The winners in both sections received the cash prize of Rs 25,000 each while the runners-up pocketed cash prize of Rs 15,000 each besides, trophies. Jagdeep Singh from Rest of Punjab and Kiranjit Kaur of Ludhiana were declared the best players among men and women, respectively. They got cash prize of Rs 5,000 each. |

Inter-zonal tournament begins
Ludhiana,September 17 Competition in kho-kho,basketball and kabaddi disciplines for boys in different age groups are being conducted. Rupinder Singh Ravi, assistant education officer (sports) inaugurated the tournament. A large number of officers of the district education department were also present at the inaugural function. In kabaddi (u-19), Samrala zone thrashed the Jagraon zone 41-6; Khanna zone beat Raikot zone ; Sahnewal zone defeated PAU zone; (u-17)- Ludhiana zone prevailed over Jagraon 74-65; Sahnewal zone overpowered PAU zone; Khanna zone beat Raikot zone; (u-14)- Khanna zone out numbered Kila Raipur zone 96-55; Ludhiana zone II beat Raikot zone 58-42; Sahnewal zone outclassed Samrala zone 76-72 and Jagraon zone drubbed PAU zone 63-8. In the basketball (u-14), PAU zone beat Sahnewal zone 32-5; (u-17)- PAU zone defeated Raikot zone 34-11. In kho-kho (u-14), Ludhiana zone II beat Samrala zone 11-9; PAU zone defeated Raikot zone 11-8; (u-17)- Khanna zone beat Sahnewal zone 12-10; (u-19)- Khanna zone beat Samrala zone 28-3 and PAU zone beat Kila Raipur zone 19-17. |
