In the search for a golden standard among the available treatments, the World Health Organisation currently rates bariatric surgery as the only available treatment for the morbidly obese patients. There is an encouraging increase in the number of surgeons who have a major role to play in treating the victims of this extremely serious and life-threatening ailment.

There surgery and the post-operative care involved extensive monitoring and with the latest hi-tech equipment, trained personnel in almost all discipline of medicine, only selected centres where all these facilities were available should be performing these operations.
