Speaking Out
India resurging, but...

The emphatic win scripted by Team India in the inaugural Twenty20 Cricket World Cup has led the generation X to think about India’s resurgence in sports 24 years after the magical evening at Lord’s. Tribune staffer G.S. Paul finds out what students feel about the country’s revival in the global sports arena

Abhilash SharmaIndeed, after 24 years, Dhoni and his men have relived those glittering moments at Lord’s. This could not be attributed to sheer luck. It is definitely the resurgence of India. The win has certainly improved our position in the global domain

— Abhilash Sharma

—Khushboo The young players have proved their mettle by performing on the world stage. Slogan “Chak De...” has brought about an awakening. There is a marked change in the mindset of parents, who now see brighter career prospects in sports

—Khushboo

— Kunal Sharma It’s sheer fluke. This Twenty20 concept is catching up but its life is not long. ODIs and Test cricket ties are the real tests for players’ skills. It would be, too, early to say that there is going to be resurgence of India in sports

— Kunal Sharma

— Vijay Karan Sandhu Our win in the Twenty20 World Cup, no doubt, has created a history of sorts but we can’t say that it would help India to emerge as a sports hub. We will definitely cherish the win but its impact would not last long

— Vijay Karan Sandhu
