CBSE North Zone II hockey tournament begins

Ludhiana, September 25
Hosts Guru Nanak Public School, Ludhiana, defeated Sacred Heart Convent School, Ludhiana, 2-0 in the boys (u-19) while Blooming Dales School, Hisar, beat Maharaja Aggarsain School, Sirsa, 4-2 in the girls u-19 to begin their campaign on a rousing note in the CBSE North Zone II Hockey Tournament, being played at Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, here today.

In the girls’ section, the two teams were tied two-all at half time. Hisar girls pumped in two more goals in the second session to win it 4-2.

In the girls (u-14) section, MDN Public School, Panipat, scored an easy 4-0 victory against KM Public School, Bhiwani. In another match (girls u-14), Arya Girls Public School, Panipat, routed Polic Public School, Bhiwani, 4-0.

In the boys section (u-14), NDM Public School, Bhiwani, proved too good for Sacred Heart Convent School, Ludhiana, who they thrashed 7-0 and Jhamku Devi Senior Secondary School, Abohar, blanked Darshan Academy, Hisar, 7-0.

In the u-17 years category, Moti Lal Nehru Sports School, Rai, had to toil hard against Mehta Gurkul, Doraha, before romping home victorious 3-1.

Earlier, Jasbir Singh Cheema, chairman of Guru Nanak Public School, inaugurated the four-day tournament in which teams from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are participating. The chief guest took salute at an impressive march past.

Navneet Singh of Guru Nanak Public School took oath on behalf of the participating teams to play with true sportsmanship.

Ludhiana rural sports tourney from Oct 3

Ludhiana, September 25
The sports department, Ludhiana, in association with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) will organise district-level rural sports meet for boys and girls (u-16) here at Guru Nanak Sports Complex on October 3 and 4.

Gianinder Singh Sandhu, district sports officer, Ludhiana, said competition in disciplines of athletics, basketball, kabaddi, kho-kho, hockey, volleyball and weightlifting for both boys and girls and football, tug-of-war and wrestling for boys would be held during this two day meet.

The participants who are u-16 years of age on December 31, 2007, and who are living or studying in a rural area for the last two years, are eligible to take part in this meet. The players will be given the bus fare, besides Rs 30 per day as refreshment charges.

On the basis of their performance during this tournament, Ludhiana teams will be selected for the Punjab State Rural Sports Tournament for boys scheduled to be held at Hoshiarpur from October 8 to 10 an state meet for girls slated to be held from October 23 to 25 at Bathinda, Sandhu added.

Sangrur beat Ludhiana in finals

Ludhiana, September 25
Ludhiana fought against Sangrur before going down 1-2 in the final (boys) of the Ninth Punjab State Sub-Junior Softball Championship being held at Ramgarhia Education Complex, Miller Ganj, here today.

In the girl’s section, Sangrur defeated Gurdaspur 6-5 to win the title. In the league matches (boys), Mohali managed to scrape past Fatehgarh Sahib with a thin margin (7-6); Barnala defeated Ferozepur 3-2; Sangrur outclassed Mohali 3-0; Moga prevailed over Gurdaspur 5-4 and Ludhiana routed Barnala 10-0.

In the semi-finals, Sangrur beat Amritsar 4-2 while Ludhiana outplayed Moga 5-0 to set up the title clash.

In the girl’s section, host Ludhiana surrendered against Moga. Ludhiana eves failed to open their account and lost it 0-12 while Sangrur outnumbered Taran Tarn 11-1 and Gurdaspur blanked Moga 10-0.
