Bank of Mysore storm into semifinals

Chandigarh, September 26
State Bank of Mysore stormed into the semifinals of the 14th All-India JP Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament, defeating ONGC XI by five wickets in the last league match at St John’s School, Sector 26, here today.

In the rain-truncated match, ONGC hit meagre 95 runs in allotted 20 overs. Only Gagan Khoda played a defiant knock of 24 runs while Mohammad Saif made 18 runs.

State Bank of Mysore achieved the target in 16.1 overs, losing just five wickets. Openers Tilka Naidu (23) and Vijay (18) piled up 42 runs in the first six overs. Akhil Kumar also chipped in 22 runs.

Former Test player Sarandeep Singh and Sumit Narwal took two wickets each.

State Bank of Mysore will face PCA Colts in the semifinal on September 28 at PCA Stadium, Mohali.

Ryan, Xavier’s set up final date

Ryan International School, Sector 49, Chandigarh, and St Xavier’s (blues) of Panchkula will meet in the final of the Ess Vee Soccer Cup for U-13 at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3, tomorrow.

Ryan International beat Yadvindra Public School (YPS), Mohali, by 1-0 while Xavier’s drubbed Alpine School, Pinjore, 3-0.

In the match between Ryan and YPS, the all-important goal was scored by Piyush in the 24th minute.

In the second match, Xavier’s dominated the proceedings from the word ‘go’. The team shot into the lead in the seventh minute.

In the 21st minute, Alpine defender Himanshu netted the ball into his own goal in an attempt to clear it. Rishab extended the lead five minutes later.

Earlier, Xavier’s defeated Stepping Stones of Chandigarh by 3-1 in the quarterfinal match whereas YPS beat Little Flower School, Panchkula, by 2-0 through a tie-breaker.

Riding high on two goals by Sehaj (4th and 10th min), Ryan got the better of Doon International School, Chandigarh, 3-0 while Alpine School of Pinjore defeated Holy Child of Panchkula by 2-0.

Aakash, Ankita set new records

Aakash Antil of Haryana set a new national record of 56.36m in the boys’ u-18 category of discus throw on the second day of 19th North Zone Junior Athletics Championship 2007 held at Panjab University, here, today. He broke the five-year old record of Simranjit Singh.

Sports events to mark Bhagat Singh’s anniversary

The Mohali sports department will celebrate the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh from September 29 to October 1 at Government Senior Secondary School, Phase 3-B-I, here. Tributes will also be paid to Rajguru and Sukhdev.

Giving details of the celebration, district sports officer of Mohali said, “Competitions in various disciplines of athletics, basketball, volleyball, hockey, tug-of-war, football, wrestling and kho-kho will be organised.”

City’s badminton teams

The Chandigarh Badminton Association has selected the following players to represent the city in the North Zone Inter-state Badminton Championship to be held at New Delhi from September 28 to 30. Women’s team: Navita Thakur, Manju, Purnica, Seema.

Men’s team: Oscar Bansal, Pankaj Nathni, Ashish, Vivek, Vikas, Akash Sethi, Amit Sachdeva. Junior girls’ team: Purnica, Nisha, Chetna, Rakhi.

All-weather pool opens

Chandigarh, September 26
Punjab Governor and UT administrator Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd) inaugurated the state-of-the-art all-weather swimming pool in Sector 23, here, today. According to sources, the pool, equipped with the ultra-modern facilities like solar water heating system, has been constructed at a cost of Rs 98 lakh.

As many as 165 solar panels have been installed to maintain required temperature during winters. — TNS

Sushil Kapoor is coordinator

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has appointed PCA official Sushil Kapoor as coordinator with the Australian team, which will visit the country to play a seven-match ODI series next month.

Kapoor had earlier been the coordinator for the England team in 2006 during its tour to the country.

As many as 27 teams from Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are participating.
