Major college projects put on hold
Chandigarh, September 27 Take for example, Government College for Girls, Sector 42. Starting from basic infrastructure such as repair of toilets to sports infrastructure (Rs 2,52,500 sanctioned in 2005) that includes cinder track, basketball, badminton and volleyball courts, multipurpose gymnasium hall, auditorium, eco-friendly park, nothing has been done so far. Most of these are capital projects approved by the education department and are pending with either the office of the chief engineer for preparing rough cost estimates or the office of the chief architect. Similarly, at Government College, Sector 11, construction of the cinder track began but was stopped abruptly as the department of public health was to do some necessary work on it. Sports pavilion, hockey and football grounds are still awaited since 2005 though funds have been sanctioned. A multipurpose/gymnasium hall is lying pending since 2002 and the work for constructing the first floor for the department of professional studies has not started yet. This, despite the fact that both these colleges need sports infrastructure urgently for running the BPEd course. At Government College, Sector 46, sports infrastructure, including a 400-metre track sanctioned in 2006, a gymnasium, basketball and lawn tennis courts are pending with the engineering and architect departments. Even at Government College for Girls, Sector 11, one basketball and two volleyball courts and a cricket pitch are pending since 2002 and the required amount of funds have also been sanctioned. Last but not the least is the building of Government College of Commerce and Business Administration announced around one-and-a-half year back, which was to come up on 10 acre land in Sector 50 in 18 months’ time. Surprisingly, not even a single brick has been laid at the site so far. When contacted, S.K. Sandhu, finance secretary-cum-secretary (engineering), said, “Whatever projects are delayed due to any reasons, they will be looked into immediately. We are also getting additional plan allocation so there will be no problem monetarily. Also, the functioning of the architect department has been toned up.” When contacted, director, higher education, Raji P. Shrivastava, denied any delay. She said, “Work is in progress on the projects and the momentum will be stepped up in the coming months.” |
