N-Deal Washington, September 27 Opening the US-hosted two-day meeting of the ‘Major Economies on Energy Security and Climate Change’ here, she said global leaders now have a responsibility to forge a new international consensus on how to address climate change. “With India, we have negotiated an agreement to open a path of cooperation on civil nuclear energy and technology. Once finalised, this agreement will help one of the world’s fastest-growing energy consumers to meet its people’s economic aspirations by launching a second green revolution,” Rice said in her inaugural address. “We also helped to bring the two largest developing countries — China and India — together with other regional states to form the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate. Working with major global leaders of private industry, our governments are seeking to share new technologies that can fuel economic development,” she added. — PTI
Pranab, Rice discuss ‘issues of concern’ New Delhi, September 27 The ministry of external affairs issued a long press release on Mukherjee’s engagements in New York today but there was no direct reference to the 123 Agreement in context of the Mukherjee-Rice meeting. This is what the MEA said on this meeting: “… The two leaders (Mukherjee and Rice) reviewed bilateral relations across the gamut of items of cooperation. They also considered the international situation, and exchanged views on issues of concern.” Rice and many American officials have gone on record saying in past few days wherein they have stressed the need for expediting the process so that the 123 agreement could be taken to its logical conclusion. The Manmohan Singh government is currently shackled by the Left parties, which have time and again warned the government against taking up the IAEA and the NSG laps of 123 negotiations. The phrase “issues of concern”, used by the MEA press release in context of the Mukherjee-Rice discussions, are an obvious reference to the 123 deal. After meeting Rice, Mukherjee left for Washington DC to lead the Indian delegation to ‘Major Economies Meeting on Energy Security and Climate Change’, being convened by the State Department. |
