Retirement rules flouted
DAV teachers demand action against erring colleges
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 30
While appreciating his efforts to enforce the rules and regulations incorporated in the Panjab University Calendar regarding retirement benefits for the employees of the affiliated colleges, the employees of DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, urged the vice-chancellor to take strict action against the two premier colleges of Chandigarh - DAV, Sector 10, and MCM DAV, Sector 36, for allegedly failing to implement the directions of the university in this regard.

The Panjab University had issued notices to DAV and MCM Colleges, warning them that if they continued to violate the statutes of the university Calendar with regard to retirement benefits viz contributory provident fund on total salary and leave encashment, the university will be forced to impose penalties under regulations 11.1, and 11.2 of the PU Calendar.

Then again, in a letter dated September 20, 2007, the Panjab University instructed the colleges to implement the university rules latest by September 30, 2007. The employees expressed their gratitude to the vice-chancellor and Syndicate for taking up these long-pending issues for an early resolution.

In a statement, Prof Anil Sarwal, president, DAV College Teachers’ Union said, “The only retirement benefits the employees are entitled to are contributory provident fund (CPF), leave encashment and gratuity and these too are being denied to them.

The CPF that they receive now compares poorly with the amount they would have received had the colleges rightfully followed the PU rules on CPF which came into effect in 1984-85, a good 22 years back. The provision of encashment of unutilised earned leave came into effect in 1990, 17 years back.”

R. K. Anand, secretary of the union, stated that the two colleges, in utter disregard of their obligations of affiliation, continue to violate most provisions contained in the PU Calendar which included four fold increase in fee structure.

Meanwhile, in a meeting today, the management of SD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh, decided to implement the encashment of unutilised earned leave for all its employees and further decided to put Rs 50 lakh in corpus, for this purpose, for the financial year 2008-09 to meet the liability.

The teachers of DAV and MCM Colleges welcomed the decision and extended their facilitations to the SD College management for it.

An evening of Sufiana music at Kalagram
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, September 30
The North Zone Cultural Centre presented a special programme of ghazals and Sufiana music by well known academician, poet and maestro Rajesh Mohan.

In the veritably titled ‘Bazam-e-Tarunnam’, the musical renditions by Mohan had all the delicacy and fineness of feeling besides the expression which is the ultimate literary aspect of a ghazal or nazam.

“The major highlight of the programme is the fact that in spite of the maestro being visually-impaired, he is excellent not only as a lyricist but also as a singer, which I think, is phenomenal,” lauded chief guest Baldev Singh Sobti, additional district and session judge.

Prof Rajesh Mohan has two poetic creations ‘Khawb likh rha hoon…’ and Ek be- manzila safar’ to his credit.

The maestro, blessed with an insight of a prolific lyricist and a music composer, brought alive the relative emotional ingredient with dexterous precision through his ghazals, be it ‘Kya ajeeb fitrat hai…’ or ‘Mein gehrayian naapta thakk gya’.

He was at his best with a composition based on raga ‘Darbari’ which spelled magic with music and words alike.

Mohan concluded the soiree with a Punjabi ghazal ‘Mayein ni mein’.

Earlier, one of his disciples Ravi Kumar gave a solo tabla performance while Mandeep Mani and Makhan Saxena, all from Faridkot, presented ghazals and Punjabi songs much to the delight of the scant but receptive audience who relished the musical performances till late evening. Mahipal Sharma conducted the
programme.

Raising funds at dance workshop
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, September 30
The Rotary house in Sector 18 here, witnessed a burst of bonanza with a difference as 75 young couples, not professional dancers but aspirants, attempted to imbibe and make most of the basics of the Latin American dance forms at an annual dance workshop conducted by the Rotaract Club, Chandigarh yesterday.

These celebrations of fun, frolic and excitement bore a special significance, as the envisaged project happens to be a part of the fund-raising programme to run the ongoing social welfare projects initiated by the Rotaract Club.

While the 130 Rotaract members are putting in great efforts to accomplish the noble missions, they also endeavour to create general awareness about our obligations and duties to the society we live in.

“We have initiated many social service projects for slum children in Janta Colony, PGI, Pustak School, Bal Niketan-15, where the members trained the inmates in a variety of crafts so that they can support themselves later on in their lives,” claims Jaskaran Singh, an engineering student.

Directing and making the couples dance to the tunes of various Latin American dances, be it salsa, jive, meringue or cha-cha, the vivacious club president Nupur Aggarwal, duly supported by Naveen, carefully monitored each and every movement of all her ‘students’.

The workshop concluded today but will again be held on October 6 and 7 between 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm in three sessions of an hour each, informed club director Amit Khurana.
