Experts discuss liver ailments, cure Chandigarh, September 30 Prof Shah is here to participate in the conference on ‘Current Perspectives in Liver Diseases (CPLD-2007)’ organised by the department of hepatology at the PGI, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the department of gastroenterology, AIIMS, New Delhi. It is a zoonotic infection transmitted to humans most commonly by dogs through ingestion of excreta containing eggs. To avoid the problem, it is advisable to wash fruits and vegetables properly before consuming, cautioned Dr Shah from Aga Khan University, Karachi. It is a relatively benign disease with a prolonged course and mortality from it is uncommon, informed Dr Shah. While the first day was devoted to infections in liver diseases, including a panel discussion on hepatitis C virus and hepatic endocrinology, today, on the concluding day, the conference started with a clinico-pathological conference and Dr Pankaj Puri and Dr S. Datta Gupta, both from Delhi, discussed the clinical and pathology aspects respectively, of a difficult case. In the symposium on hepatitis and renal diseases, the prevalence and prevention of hepatitis B and C virus and problems in treating such patients were discussed by Dr V. Sakhuja from Chandigarh, Dr G. Kurian from Vellore and Dr V.K. Gupta from New Delhi. The fact that these patients are difficult to treat, both before and after renal transplantation, was highlighted. Prof S. Tenner from the USA elaborated on the drugs causing pancreatitis and pathogenesis of alcohol-induced pancreatitis. |

Dengue cases go up to 16 Chandigarh, September 30 With this, the number of dengue patients reaching the city hospitals has gone up to 16. Dr Rajinder Sharma, assistant director, malaria and vector-borne diseases control programme, said a survey suggested that seven dengue patients belonged to the city, while nine had been admitted to hospitals from adjoining areas, including Panchkula and Mohali. Fumigation was being carried out at inter-state border areas adjoining Panchkula, Mohali, like Mani Majra, Mauli Jagran, and Palsora colony. Checking of desert coolers, water coolers, overhead water tanks had been intensified and over 500 defaulters had been issued challans, he said. |

6 crore heart patients in India Chandigarh, September 30 The discussion was held on the occasion of World Heart Day at the IMA office in Sector 35. Over 135 persons participated. “There are six crore cardiac patients in India. The presence of dyslipidemia increases in CAD patients by four times and the risk of diabetes increases by three times. Chances of hypertension and stress increase by 2.5 times each. However, this can be easily managed through a change in lifestyle, eating habits and a proper exercise programme,” doctors said. |
