Teachers resent govt policies
Ludhiana, October 1 Parveen Kumar, general secretary, Punjab Government School Teachers Union, Ludhiana, said four buses with 300 government teachers had already left for Kapurthala where more than 8,000 teachers from all over the state were expecting to join them in the protest against education minister Upinderjit Kaur. “They are exploiting the teachers by paying meagerly. Now, they are planning to fill thousands of vacancies by paying fixed salaries of just Rs 5,400 and Rs 4,500. Not only this, instead of appointing teachers in primary and secondary schools, they have given them new names of teaching fellow and provider education. We will not tolerate this at any cost”, said Parveen Kumar. The teachers are led by state president Jagmel Singh. |
Sandhu’s arrest: Lawyers strike work
Ludhiana, October 1 However, leaders of the SAD and the BJP legal cell observed diplomatic silence and refused to comment in this regard. President of the Bar Hemant Kalia and secretary Ravi Garewal said the lawyers had decided to abstain work to show solidarity with Sandhu, who was falsely implicated in the case due to political vendetta. However, lawyers attended urgent matters in order to save their clients from any harassment. Condemning the arrest, chairman of District Congress Committee legal cell Dharmjit Singh Khera, convener Ashok Bhakri, P.D. Sharma, Kanwaljit Sharma, Rana Harjasdeep Singh, Satwant Singh Garewal and Rahul Pathak said arresting a lawyer to interrogate him for getting the secrets of his client was a wrong precedent. They have appealed to the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana to intervene in the matter. Samrala: On the call given by the Ludhiana District Bar Association, lawyers of the local bar suspended work today. Talking to mediapersons, secretary of the Bar Gaurav Chopra said the arrest was totally baseless. It was the high-handedness of the vigilance that he has been falsely implicated, just because of his proximity with former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh. Parminder Singh Gill, general secretary (legal cell), Punjab, termed the action of the vigilance as a political vendetta. |
‘Birah’ finds audience
in students
Ludhiana, October 1 Birah, the longing for the beloved, is a popular folk form of Uttar Pradesh and is still sung with equal passion and longing. Today when Kailash performed at the Wylie Memorial School in the morning in a programme organised by the Spicmacay, his audience was little different. Schoolchildren. Yet he managed to involve each one of them with full delight. It was certainly brilliant of him to involve and sustain the interest of the children in an old folk form that too in an age of fast moving world. He said irrespective of the phenomenal progress made in the arts, particularly the music, the folk form was certain to survive. There is something unique in the folk traditions which is an integral part of life. "It is not possible to separate real life from such traditions", he remarked. Atul Talwar, the local coordinator of the Spicmacay disclosed that the programmes had been generating lots of interests among the young generation. He said during the performance at the school and later at the Ramgarhia College, the audiences were spellbound by the Birah presentation. |
