The first of its kind in Punjab, a job fair organised by the Union Ministry of industry and commerce, the Indian Trade Promotion Organisation and the Timesjob.com at Gurdaspur recently evoked a massive response.

The packed premises of Beant Singh College of Engineering the Technology, Gurdaspur with over 20,000 qualified jobless youth from Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Amritsar and surroundings areas were a comment on the challenge of unemployment before the people in the border belt.

Job offers in different sectors from 38 national companies of repute to over 700 seekers was the result of the efforts made by the minister of state for industries Dr Ashwani Kumar to implement the central government's policy of empowerment of youth through employment generation.

The companies included Maruti Udyog Limited, CPL Bajaj, Bharti, Convergys, Subros Limited, Larsen and Turbo Limited, Hindustan construction company limited, Lafarge, Vardhman, Max life, Apollo Tyres, Mukund Steel, Bajaj Autos and Ashoka Leyland.

Amit Ghosh, a spokesperson for Timesjob.com, said that the number of job seekers was beyond the expectations of the organisers who came forward to recruit rural talent. He said over 16000 job seekers were registered at a walk-in interview for 2000 vacancies provided by 38 companies at the spot.

"Empowerment of the youth through gainful employment is a national imperative and priority of the UPA government . I have endeavoured to pay a befitting tribute to the great son of India (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) by organising the Rozgar mela at Gurdaspur, which is first of its kind in Punjab, " said Dr Kumar .

The vice-president of timesjob.com Rajiv Gaud said that the job fair would be of a great help for talented youth of this remote area who, for various reasons, could not go the metros to explore job opportunities.
