Students pledge to follow Bapu’s ideals

Ludhiana, October 2
A poster-making competition was held at Green Land Senior Secondary Public School to mark Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahadur Jayanti, here today. The students paid homage to the Father of the Nation by offering prayers and pledging to follow the path of non-violence. In an effort to spread the message of peace and brotherhood, the students used quotations like ‘Simple Living and High Thinking’, ‘Non-violence Knows no Limits’, ‘Gandhian Philosophy -Peace, Non-violence and Empowerment’, ‘Gandhigiri - The Need of The Hour’, etc, on the posters. They also pledged to adapt the diligence of Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Meanwhile, an inter-section declamation contest was held at the primary level, highlighting the Gandhian values and their importance during the present times.

SKN Model High School: Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated under the guidance of school principal K.D. Arora. The students were told about the life of Mahatma Gandhi and were asked to follow the path of truth and non-violence. Students recited poems and sang ‘Raghupati Raghav’ on the occasion. School headmistress Dulari Kaura asked the students to build a new nation as envisioned by the Bapu.

Shaheed-e-Azam Sukhdev Thapar Government Girls’ Senior Secondary School: In association with Sanjivni Welfare Society, the school celebrated Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday at the school premises. Chief parliamentary secretary Harish Rai Dhanda and district education officer Sudesh Bajaj were the guests of honour on the occasion. More than 25 needy students were provided with winter uniforms and sweaters by the association members.

Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women: To mark Gandhi Jayanti, the NSS unit of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women organised a "Chetna March" against female foeticide in the course of their 10-day camp here today. Assistant civil surgeon Dr Manorama Awasthi flagged off the march which had more than 100 volunteers, who were carrying mottos and banners, saying "Save the girl child", "Do not kill daughters, they are precious" and "Female foeticide is a crime."

District mass education and information officer Satish Sachdeva said the country had lost a large number of girls during the last decade because of the indulgence of people in foeticide, which was not only unfortunate, but would have serious repercussions on the society in times to come.

Principal of the college Manju Chawla encouraged the volunteers to provide their continuous support to eliminate the practice of sex-selective abortions and the craving for male child so that prevailing male-female ratio could be corrected in future.

Green Grove Public School: Gandhi Jyanti was celebrated with great fervour at Green Grove Public School Mohanpur, Khanna, on Monday. Sukhneer of Class VII expressed her gratitude to Gandhiji through her speech. A quiz on Gandhiji was also organised. Students from Class I to Class IX participated in this quiz. All students were divided into four teams comprising five participants each. Principal of the school S. George appreciated the efforts of the students and the teachers in making the quiz a great success.

Govt High School, Rampur: Students participated in the declamation contest and poetical symposium, especially organised in the memory of the great soul. A colorful choreography and group song added charm to this day. Headmistress of the school Gurdeep Kaur appreciated the efforts of the students and the teachers.

Gandhi Jayanti: In connection with the celebrations of Gandhi Jayanti and late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, a meeting of literary persons held in Kavita Bhawan, here Tuesday. Presided by Prof Baldeep, all speakers highlighted the qualities of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.

Khalsa pays surprise ITI visit

Samrala, October 2
Chief parliamentary secretary Bikramjeet Singh Khalsa paid a surprise visit to the local ITI.

Khalsa checked urinals and bathrooms of the institute and demanded explanation from the person concerned. He checked the attendance record of staff members, including principal. He issued a probe against the clerk who was found absent.
