Function: Shaheed Bhagat Singh Public School held its annual function on Tuesday. A cultural programme dedicated to the birth centenary of the martyr was organised on the occasion. Students presented choreography on female foeticide. Bhola Singh Virk, Akali leader, asked the womanfolk to curb the practice of female foeticide. School principal Kulwinder Kaur Bath enlisted the achievements of the school.
Suicide: Debt-ridden Dalit committed a suicide at Maur Nabha village by hanging himself on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Sarup Singh. Allured by glorious futures abroad, he sent his son to Malaysia by taking heavy loans. But his son, who was sent illegally by a travel agent, got caught in the police net. The police sent his son to jail. The Shaina police registered a case u/s 174.
Office-bearers elected: Office-bearers of the National Consumer Awareness Group of Tapa subdivision are as follows: president-C. Markanda; general secretary-Bhim Sen; senior vice-president-Prem Nath Shant; cashier- Surinder Sharma; and legal advisor-Janak Gargi.
Meeting held: The Nambardar Union of the district held a meeting at the local Singh Sabha Gurudwara under the presidentship of Jaggar Singh. Addressing the meeting Jaggar Singh said nambardari was based on the heredity system. So their union would protest against any such appointment which would be made without adopting the system. Only a nambadar’s son had the right to become the next nambardar at his place, he added.

Found dead: An unidentified beggar was found dead in the Kissan Express train at the local railway station here on Monday night.Sahara Welfare Service workers immediately sent an ambulance to the spot. No document or any other article helping in establishing the deceased’s address was found there.They then cremated the body at the local cremation ground.

Eye camp: The Sardar Ajaib Singh Sagoo Welfare Council, Jagraon, organised its fourth eye check-up camp at Vishkarma Mandir. It was attended by Daljit Singh Cheema, OSD to the Chief Minister. Gurcharan Singh Galib, a former MP, Gurdip Singh Bhaini, MLA, Bhag Singh Malah, a former MLA, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, SSP, Ludhiana, Gurcharan Singh Grewal, president, Sikh Students Federation, addressed the gathering and commended the services of the society. Dr Sukhjiwan Kakkar and his team examined 500 patients and recommended 50 patients for operations. Nachhattar Singh Sagoo and Harwinder Singh Sagoo honoured guests.
Case
registered: Five occupants of a car have robbed a salesman of Sahota Petrol Pump on the Jagraon-Sidhwan Bet road. A case has been registered by the Sidhwan Bet police.
Meeting: The Punjab Government Transport Workers Union, Jagraon branch, at its gate meeting on Tuesday condemned the move of the state government to close the Jagraon transport depot.

Andolan: The Congress may start Jail Bharo Andolan to counter vendetta and unleash political terror of the SAD- BJP in the state. This was disclosed by Nabha MLA Kaka Randeep Singh. He was talking to mediapersons at the local PWD rest house on Tuesday.
PATHANKOT
4 held: Four persons, including an employee of a diesel shed in the Railway department, were nabbed by the police while taking a diesel-laden tanker for sale. SSP Lok Nath Angra said all four were arrested under Sections 379, 409 and 411, IPC. He said the accused were identified as Parveen Mohan, Madan Singh, Vijay Kumar and Vipan Kumar.

Fake currency: The Khalra police unearthed a five-member gang, including two women, indulging in fake currency business. The police recovered 30 notes of Rs 50 of fake Indian currency, whereas 50 notes were recovered printed from one side of Rs 50, besides a printer and other material. SSP P.K. Rai said Rashpal Singh, alias Shallo, of Dhotian village was the king pin while the other members were Mangal Singh, Gurbhej Singh, Shindo and Narinder Kaur. Three members were arrested while two managed to escape. A case under Sections 489-A, 489-B, 489-C, 489-D had been registered against the accused.
