Jarkhar and Jassowal defeated their respective opponents to enter hockey finals in the boys section on the opening day of the two-day Ludhiana District Inter-Block Rural Sports Meet (u-16) being organised by the Punjab Sports Department with the help of Sports Authority of India (SAI) at Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today.

In the semi finals, Jarkhar outplayed Raikot 4-0 while Jassowal beat Khaira 1-0 to set up the title clash.

The Sidhwan Bet block in the boy's section while Raikot block in the girl's section won their kho-kho matches. In the boy's section, the Sidhwan Bet block outnumbered the Jagraon block by one innings and 11 points while Ludhiana I proved too good for Machhiwara block whom they outplayed by an innings and 10 points.

In another match, Sudhar block overpowered Sidhwan Bet block by one innings and 7 points.

In the girl's section, Raikot block proved their mettle against Machhiwara block drubbing them by one innings and 7 points while Doraha block prevailed over Ludhiana II block by 10 points.

Earlier, Hira Singh Gabria, cabinet minister, Punjab inaugurated the meet in which more than 1,000 u-16 boys and girls are taking part in 10 disciplines.

Gianinder Singh Sandhu, district sports officer, Ludhiana, along with coaches, sports personalities and sports organisers were present on this occasion.

First day's results: Football (boys)- Khanna block bt Mangat block 2-0; Raikot block bt Pakhowal block 2-0 and Suhdar block bt Khanna block 1-0.

Kabaddi (girls)- Pakhowal block bt Raikot block 64-51; Dehlon block bt Jagraon block 57-34; (boys)- Dehlon block bt Machhiwara block 55-16; Raikot block bt Doraha block 54-34; Samrala block bt Dehlon block 52-47.

Volleyball (boys)- Raikot block bt Samrala block 3-0; Machhiwara block bt Dehlon block 3-0; Khanna block bt Jagraon block 3-0 and Raikot block bt Samrala 3-0.

Athletics: (girls) 200 m- Ekam Jot of Khanna block 1, Jasvir Kaur of Pakhowal block 2; 800 m- Rabeen Sharma of Khanna block 1 and Lakhbir Kaur of Raikot block 2; long jump- Navdeep Kaur of Pakhowal block 1 and Arvinder Kaur of Raikot block 2; shot put- Nancy of Raikot block 1 and Aashma of Raikot block 2.

Boys: 200 m - Gurpreet Singh of Khanna block 1 and Gurmeet Singh of Raikot block 2; 1500 m- Dharminder Kumar of Khanna block 1 and Paramjit Singh of Jagraon 2; shot put- Punnet Pal of Sudhar block 1 and Tarlochan Singh of Khanna block 2; long jump- Surjit Singh of Raikot block 1 and Arvinder Singh of Sudhar block 2.Hockey (girls)- Kila Raipur block bt Bahadurgarh block 3-1; (boys)- Jarkhar bt Bahadurgarh 6-0.

Govt earmarks Rs 2 cr to promote sports

Ludhiana, October 3
The Punjab government has chalked out a detailed plan for the promotion of sports and, during the current financial years, funds amounting to Rs 2 crore has been earmarked for strengthening of sports infrastructure in different parts of the state.

This was stated by Hira Singh Gabria, Cabinet minister, Punjab, while addressing a gathering at Guru Nanak Stadium where he had come to inaugurate the Ludhiana District Inter- Block Rural Sports Meet for boys and girls u-16 here today.

The minister said the government was going to set up a number of sports academies, where upcoming and talented players would be given training of particular game to prepare them for the national and international competitions.

Gabria further said the government would spend Rs 75 lakh on training and providing international level sports equipment to players during this year and Rs 50 lakh was being spent for the improvement of the stadiums in the state.

Expressing serious concern over the utilisation of intoxicants and drugs by the youth in rural areas, Gabria said the special attention was being given to set up more sports clubs in the rural areas and good coaches were being deputed for coaching in the rural sports centres.

He said the government would also observe the outstanding national and international players in the government jobs to encourage the sports.

Gabria said medals winners at the national and international events would also be honoured suitably. He exhorted the budding players to lay stress on further sharpening their sports skills so that they could bring honours for the state as well as country.

Gian Inder Singh Sandhu, district sports officer, Ludhiana, said around 1,200 players from 12 blocks were taking part in 10 sports events i.e. athletics, basketball, volleyball, football, hockey, kabaddi, kho-kho, weightlifting, wrestling and tug of war. He said the winner teams in boys section of these games would participate in the state-level competitions to be held at Hoshiarpur from October 10 to 12 and winner teams of girls will participate in state games scheduled to be held at Bathinda from October 23 to 25.

Among others who were present on the occasion included J. P. Singh DDPO, Shivtar Singh Bajwa, vice-president of the District Football Association, Jagdev Singh Gohalwaria, Harpreet Singh Bedi and Sohan Singh Goga.

BSNL cycling meet begins today

Teams from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, North-East circle, MTNL (New Delhi) and MTNL (Mumbai) besides the host and the defending champions, Punjab circle will be seen in action during the two-day 7th All-India Cycling Meet to be organised by BSNL Punjab Circle Sports and Cultural Board here at Punjab Agricultural University velodrome on October 4 and 5.

S.K.Nigam, general manager, Telecom, Ludhiana, said Rajendera Singh, chief general manager, Telecom, Punjab, will inaugurate the meet on Thursday.
