Murder of Sirsa journalist
SC rejects plea for cancelling dera chief’s bail
Legal Correspondent

New Delhi, October 3
The Supreme Court today dismissed an application for cancelling the interim bail of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a journalist’s murder case. The apex court advised the kin of the Sirsa-based scribe Ram Chander Chattrapati to approach the trial court before which the proceedings were going on after the filing of the charge sheet by the CBI.

A Bench of justices Ashok Bhan and V.S. Sirpurkar rejected the application of Chattrapati’s kin after his counsel Debashish Mishra made a special mention of it for an urgent hearing.

The dera chief was accused of hatching the conspiracy of the murder of the journalist in November 2001 for having information about his alleged illegal activities.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court had earlier granted the dera chief interim bail till his application for regular bail was considered by the trial judge.

Since after filing of the charge sheet the role of the trial court is considered important to deal with all aspects of the case, including the grant of regular bail, this was the main reason for the Supreme Court refusing to intervene in the matter at this stage.
