Sensex flirts with 18K

The Sensex jumped a whopping 518 points today taking it up three per cent to touch 17,847. The benchmark index came within kissing distance of 18,000 as it touched 17,953 levels in intra-day trade. In the broader markets, the NIFTY surged past 5,200 levels to close at 5,210.

“I do not think retail investors are entering the market at this level. I would advise them caution,” finance minister P. Chidambaram told reporters here. “There is apparently a lot of interest from foreign institutional investors,” he said, adding: “Why should we not welcome it?”
