New technique in joint replacement inducted
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, October 5
SPS Apollo Hospital here has introduced the latest technique in joint replacement.

Sharing his experience in a press conference here today, Dr Harpreet Gill said interactive sessions and training under Dr Thomas Siebel, a renowned global authority on joint replacements, the designer surgeon of ASR (Articular surface replacement) of hip joint, was a rewarding opportunity.

The surgeon, he said, had designed many orthopaedic implants and was the trial surgeon of a high-flexion knee replacement.

"His centre is doing around 2,000 joint replacements a year and is recognised worldwide with fellows from different countries visiting him to learn new techniques.

He specialises in minimally invasive surgery of the hip and the knee joint replacement in which a very small cut is made to perform the procedures."

This knee implant would soon be launched worldwide and it would especially benefit the Indian population as the movements of knee achieved with this procedure are the maximum and a person can even sit cross-legged.

In the same way, since every person had a different hip joint, a new type of hip replacement had been invented in which minimal bone was removed and joint was reconstructed or customised to every individual's anatomy.

Moreover, these hip joints had ceramic or metal surfaces that lasted a longer time, he added.

Dr G.L. Avasthi, director, medical services at Apollo, stated that under the leadership of Dr Harpreet S. Gill, a special unit of joint replacement had been created which would be matching the western standards in terms of infrastructure and knowhow.
