70 plastic surgeons attend conference
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 7
Plastic surgery is a speciality which is expanding and developing at a fast pace but is limited to bigger cities only. This was stated by Dr P.S. Chari, former head of the department, PGI, at the inaugural function of the Annual Conference of North Zone Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (NZAPSI) at the PGI, here, yesterday.

More than 70 plastic surgeons from Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir are attending the conference.

Dr Chari said the problem lies in the uneven postings of doctors. People with deformities like cleft lip, burn injuries and other injuries, requiring plastic surgery remain unattended in the rural areas just because no plastic surgeon is available at village hospitals.

There is a general impression that plastic surgery is meant for cosmetic purpose only while the speciality covers virtually all parts of body from head to toe, said Dr Chari. Plastic surgeons also play an important role in care and rehabilitation of burn victims.

Commonly performed cosmetic procedures include rhinoplasty (nose job), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), correction of gynecomastia (large breasts in males), breast reduction and augmentation, blepheroplasty (eyelid rejuvenation) and facial rejuvenation with peels and dermabrasions.

Kidney patient needs help
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 7
Gurmail Singh, a 35-year-old resident of Dandwalal village of Faridkot district, is staying on the PGI lawns with his septuagenarian father Harbans Singh for the last few weeks. The son-father duo is finding it hard to pay the rent of accommodation as Gurmail is in need of post-operative treatment of renal surgery. The medicines needed every month cost more than Rs 20,000.

Having spent more than Rs 4 lakh on Gurmail’s treatment, the family has lost everything except two acres of agriculture land at their village. Seven months back, Gurmail’s mother had donated her kidney to save his life and the family had to sell one acre of their land. But now, all efforts to save the elder son of the family seem to go waste as the family is finding it difficult to meet the expenses incurred on the post-operative treatment.

“The doctors have prescribed medicines, which cost Rs 20,000 every month and during last eight months, we have spent every penny with us, including the amount we got after selling one acre of land in the village,” said the hapless father.

Gurmail’s younger brother left the family in this need of hour after getting annoyed when we decided to sell the land to get required money for the surgery, said Harbans.

“The dairy run by us has also been closed as both of us are staying here for the treatment. We sold three-marla land out of four marla meant for “rurrhi” and got Rs 12,000 to purchase the medicines last week only,” he added.

“Now, we don’t have money even to pay for a clean accommodation, as there is always a risk of infection to Gurmail. We have got a mobile phone and this is our only address as of now,” said Harbans.

One-room accommodation costs Rs 3,000 every month and we need to save every penny at the moment, says the old man. The donors can contact at 9876914368.
