Awareness on harmonal level must, says doc

Terming lack of knowledge about hormones as the major cause of morbidity prevalent among members of upper strata of the society, Dr Ramanvir Singh, a consultant endocrinologist, called upon the members of medical fraternity to join hands to make people aware of getting hormonal level known in routine in order to avoid consequences.

He urged the authorities to initiate organised measures to encourage practitioners adopt diagnostic techniques based on study of hormones before starting treatment of their patients.

While talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Dr Ramanvir Singh said hormonal imbalance, ignored at initial stage, had caused various disorders in urbanites and residents of suburban areas. Besides degrading quality of life of the affected persons, the trend resulted in strained life of other members of the families also. Huge amounts were spent on management of ailments caused due to hormonal imbalance.

Levelling diabetes as most prevalent disease among prosperous people, Dr Ramanvir pointed out that ignorance about endocrinology had christened the nation as the world capital of hormonal diseases.

Dr Ramanvir pointed out that a large number of NRIs had shown interest in educating their relatives and friends to get tests done for various hormones of the body. Therefore, people here should also take various steps to stop further damage by harmonal diseases, he added.

Harman scripts win for Mehta Gurukul

Ludhiana, October 7
Harman Mehta scored a hattrick to script 3-0 win for Mehta Gurukul, Doraha, against Amloh Academy in the u-16 years category of the Punjab Hockey League being organised by the Punjab sports department at Prithipal Singh Astro Turf Stadium of Punjab Agricultural University campus, here today.

In the second match (u-16), Bathinda beat Moga 1-0. This important goal came of Parvinder Singh’s stick in the 50th minute of the encounter.

In a match (u-14), Malwa Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, outplayed Thapar Academy, Sansarpur, 5-2.

Kulbir Singh put Malwa School ahead in the 15th minute while Akashdeep increased the lead three minutes later. Sansarpur lads reduced the margin in the 19th minute through Manpreet Singh.

Malwa School scored third goal in the 38th minute when Akashdeep found the target. Teerath Singh of Sansarpur made it 2-3 in the 45th minute. Kulbir Singh and Jatinder Singh sounded the board in the 49th and 59th minute, respectively which sealed Thapar Academy’s fate 5-2.

In the fourth match of the day, Muktsar prevailed over Grewal Academy of Kila Raipur, 3-2.

Mandeep scored a brace while Simran scored one goal for the winners. Hardeep and Shinderpal Singh chipped in with one goal each for Kila Raipur.

In the last match of the day (u-14), Akashdeep Singh struck in the 35th and 50th minute as Malwa Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, overpowered Kurlai 2-0.

Mahal gets award for umpiring

International cricket umpire and president of the Punjab Agricultural University Teachers’ Association (PAUTA) M.S.Mahal has been conferred upon with the Madhav Gourav Ratna Achievement Award 2006-07.

The National Sports Cultural and Welfare Foundation (NSCW), New Delhi, and the Scindia Club gave this prestigeous award to Mahal for his achievements in the field of cricket as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) umpire.

MP Jyotiraditya H.Scindia presented this award to him at an annual function of NSCW Foundation held in New Delhi yesterday. Mahal, who is currently working as senior entomologist, Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, had also received the PAU Foundation Award in 1997 and the Shiromani Punjab Rattan Award in 2003 from the Shaheed Memorial Sewa Society.

He has the distinction of umpiring in One Day International match between India and England in February 2002 in Munbai, one Women's World Cup ODI match between Sri Lanka and West Indies in December 1997 in New Delhi and officiated as third umpire in the ODI match between India and Zimbabwe in March 2002 in Hyderabad.

Mahal is the first scientist to achieve this distinction. Earlier, he has officiated in five three-day games against visiting foreign teams namely Pakistan (1999), Zimbabwe (2000), Australia (2001), West Indies (2002) and New Zeland (2003). He has been on the panel of BCCI umpires since 1986 and has so far officiated in at least 50 national championships, besides Challenger Trophy matches and finals of Ranji and Deodhar Trophies.

Besides sports, he has received Jawahar Lal Nehru Award in 1979 from ICAR, New Delhi, for outstanding Ph.D. founded Indian Society for the Advancement of Insect Science in July 1987, was the editor-in-chief of Journal of Insect Science from 1988 to 2002, published 74 research papers, guided nine M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and has 12 package recommendations to his credit.

Campus Club, Kalsi Club enter quarter finals

Ludhiana, October 7
Campus Cricket Club and Kalsi Cricket Club romped home victorious in their respective matches to enter quarter-finals of the second Ludhiana District Twenty20 Cricket Tournament being played at Government Institute of Textile and Knitting, Rishi Nagar, here today.

Campus Cricket Club beat the Government Institute of Textile and Knitting by 61 runs while Kalsi Club defeated Ramgarhia Club by 33 runs to advance into the last eight stage. Campus Cricket Club scored 188 runs for the loss of six wickets. Their innings revolved around Amarinder (54 runs), Kirpal (24), Mandeep (27), Arvinder (17) and Joga Singh (15),

For Government Institute XI, Anil and Ravi Sood claimed two wickets each while Gaurav and Gurpreet shared one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Government Institute XI were bowled out for 127 runs. The main scorers were Naveen (25), Manpreet (22), Gaurav (20) and Gurpreet (19).

The successful bowlers for Campus Cricket Club were Harpal ( 3 for 6), Gaurav ( 3 for 20) and Joga Singh (2 for 32).

In the second match, Kalsi Club set a target of 162 runs with main scorers- Talwinder (47), Harpinder (34) and Maninder (12). Harpal, Kamal and Baba of Ramgarhia Club took two wickets each.

Ramgarhia Club could muster 129 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs. Baba and Gurmeet contributed 29 and 16 runs, respectively. For Kalsi Club, Avtar took four wickets for 20 runs while Naveen claimed three wickets for 25 runs. — OC

Geetansh, Akhil fashion KVM victory

Geetansh Khera and Akhil Aggarwal excelled with bat and ball to help Kundan Vidya Mandir School, Civil Lines, to beat Sanatan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School by nine wickets in the PCA Boost Ludhiana District Inter-School Cricket Tournament for Boys (under-17) being played at Arya College for Boys and Bachan Singh Academy, Balloke near Haibowal Khurd, here today.

Geetansh Khera remained unbeaten on 36 runs and took three wickets for 22 runs while Akhil remained unconquered on 54 besides grabbing two wickets for 13 runs.

In the match played at Arya College, Sanatan Vidya Mandir School batting first was bowled out for 127 runs in 32.3 overs. The main contributors were Rahul (25), Shahzada (24), Devinder (20), Akashdeep (10) and Hitesh (9).

For Kundan Vidya Mandir, besides Getansh Khera (three for 22), Abhijit Randhawa and Akhil Aggarwal captured two wickets each while Salil chipped in with one wicket for six runs.

Kundan Vidya Mandir surpassed the SVM School’s total in 20.1 overs losing just one wicket. Akhil Aggarwal (54 n.o.) and Geetansh Khera (36 n.o.) were the architects of their win. Sanchit Gosain scored 15 runs. For the losers, Rahul (1 for 27) was the lone wicket taker.

In the second match played at Balloke, Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Khurd, trounced Green Land School by 86 runs.

Put into bat, Government School scored 195 all out in 39 overs. Piyush made 46, followed by Gagandeep (35), Rinku (17), Munish (16), Arjun (13), Baijnath (8) and Parth (6).

For Green Land School, Harsimran took five wickets for 27 while Mohit, Raghav and Jatinder claimed one wicket each.
