Coronary heart disease isn’t the only one: Doc
Tribune New Service

Chandigarh, October 8
Even as the coronary heart disease is discussed widely and got the attention of the media as well, there are four more heart diseases the people of the country are suffering, said Dr Anil Grover, additional professor, department of cardiology, PGI.

“While the coronary artery disease among Indians is on the rise, with an estimated 45 million patients by the year 2010 might be affected, it is receiving adequate attention from medical profession and the media as well,” said Dr Grover, adding that “nevertheless, this is also true that Indians suffer from four more heart diseases and those do not get sufficient attention”.

Rheumatic heart disease is preventable, said Dr Grover. Simply, taking care of an episode of sore throat in a child can get rid of this problem, which affects about 2 million people in India, informed the cardiologist. It led to heart valve damage where surgery cost significant amount.

Second was congenital heart disease, informed Dr Grover, saying that, “As prevention does not have much role, but awareness certainly has a role to play for this disease”.

As most children suffering with the complication and could have been operated in early childhood become inoperable in adolescence and die while they are in the age of between 30s and 40s, said the renowned cardiologist. However, in the country, a few cardiothoracic surgeons were taking interest exclusively in this field, rued Dr Grover.

Another heart problem, namely congestive heart failure, required very advanced heart transplant, said Dr Grover. Even as Dr Venugopal of AIIMS had pioneered the programme, the high cost and lack of public awareness in India towards organ donation after death had limited its role, said the cardiaologist.

Fourth ailment, heart rhythm disorder, needed pacemaker. In a majority of patients, it went undiagnosed because of lack of sample test like EKG. Therefore, this message was to remind that heart disease was not synonymous with coronary heart disease, said Dr Grover.
