APJ beat DAV in cricket tourney

Sahil’s half century proved to be futile for his DAV School, Mohali team which could not prevail over APJ School, Kharar team and lost the inaugural match of the PCA Boost Cup tournament held at C Ground at PCA, here today.

The tournament has been organised by Mohali District Cricket Association.

DAV won the toss and piled up 144 runs in 30 overs. Sahil scored 50 runs while the rest of the wickets fell like nine cards. On the other hand, Lovepreet of APJ team claimed four wickets for 23 runs while Mohit and Monu claimed two wickets for 26 and 29 runs, respectively.

In reply, the APJ team achieved the target in 23.3 overs by losing 2 wickets. They scored 146 runs.

Results: DAV School: 144 all out in 30 overs.

Sahil (50), Siddharth (17) and Arjun (14) Lovepreet 4 for 23, Mohit Bedi 2 for 26, Monu 2 for 29

APJ School: 146 for 2 in 23.3 overs.

Nitin 38, Paramdeep 35 not out, Rakesh 17 not out Siddharth 1 for 40, Sahil 1 for 21.

Yash, Nisha win 100m events

Yash Raj and Nisha of DAV Model School, Sector 15, here emerged winners in the 100 metre boys’ and girls’ events, respectively, during the Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Zonal Tournament 2007, held at Sector 7 Sports Complex here today.

Sandeep of DAV Centenary Public School, Pehowa, bagged the first place while Baljinder of DAV Public School, Naraingarh, got the second place in the long- jump event.

Gary O'Brien is CLTA coach

The Sector 10 Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) has engaged one of the top and highly qualified tennis coaches, Gary O'Brien, as director (coaching). Gary (38), ITF Level I and II certified coach today joined the CLTA officially.

Chandigarh is not new to Gary as he has conducted Level I course for coaches on behalf of the All-India Tennis Association here, Kolkata and Delhi. Gary is also ITF Level I Tutor and a certified professional from the United States Professional Tennis 
Registry.

After joining, Gary said "my priority will be to maintaining continuity in training programme for all groups and all levels."

He has conducted tennis camps in Bangladesh, North Carolina (USA) and Gold Coast (Australia).

"My stress will be on high-performance programme, specially for Under-10 and Under-12 which is the base. Through tennis control system and body composition evaluation will be done and top eight players would be selected for high-performance programme," said Gary who has worked as AITA Development Officer for North East Tennis from 2003 to 2005.

"Data of each trainee will be maintained. A result-oriented programme will be chalked out for short, mid and long-term gains. I am encouraged with the mini tennis programme of the CLTA. It is our base," said Gary.

Explaining the concept of 'private coaching', Gary said "it has plus and minus points. Private coaching aims at paying individual attention to a player. It is required for improving a player's ability and skill. My effort will be to guard the interests of the players as well as coaches. Sometimes money factor comes into play. I think that can be handled with the cooperation of the coaches."

Gary, who hails from Kolkata, has earlier worked with Paes en Sport, a sports management company run by hockey Olympian Dr Vece Paes and tennis professional Leander Paes. Gary served as manager -- Tennis and Fitness and Director Coaching from 1992 to 2002.

GGS are gymnastics champ

Chandigarh, October 9
GGS College for Women here won the Panjab University Inter-College Gymnastics Championship for 2007-08 with 100.65 points. The tournament was played at the Gymnasium hall of Sports Complex, Sector 7, here today.

MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh (94.10 points), PU Campus ( 71.75 points) and AS College for Women , Khanna ( 44.75 points), secured second, third and fourth positions, respectively.

G Mirnalini of MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, bagged the all-round individual championship with 43.15 points while Pinky of PU Campus garnered 42 points to bag the second place while the third place went to Harjeet Kaur of AS College for Women, Khanna, who earned 40.15 points.

In floor exercises, Harjeet Kaur of AS College, Khanna, and Pinky of PU campus got 10.90 points to win the first place.

Mansimran, Amrinder best shooters

Seventeen-year-old Mansimran Singh of St Joseph's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, and and Amrinder Kaur Sangha were adjudged the best shooters among men and women categories respectively, in the 32nd Chandigarh State Shooting Championship which concluded at the Patiali Ki Rao Ranges, here, today.

Mansimran bagged gold in senior as well as junior 50 metres small bore (ISSF) prone free rifle competitions. He set a new meet record with 581 points out of possible 600. Mansimran also bagged team gold. The St Joseph's shooter claimed seven medals, including five gold.

Harnoor Gill of Carmel Convent School won the gold in the junior women (NR) air pistol event. She will now be playing in the 17th All India Mavlankar Shooting Competition to be held in Agra from October 24 to Nov 2. Punjab cooperation minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh was the chief guest on the occasion.
