Make medical facilities affordable: Income tax chief

Ludhiana, October 9
The chief commissioner of income tax M.S. Rai stressed the need to bring healthcare and medical facilities within reach of the common people. He said in the wake of inadequate government infrastructure in the health sector, the responsibility lied on the private institutions to provide modern medical treatment at affordable cost to the masses.

Inaugurating the ultramodern eye-care centre, set up at a cost of Rs 56 lakh in Guru Teg Bahadur Charitable Hospital, here today, Rai lauded the role being played by private healthcare institutions, and particularly the charitable hospitals to ameliorate the suffering of mankind.

Reiterating the commitment of the hospital to provide latest medical facilities to the people at affordable cost, the medical superintendent of the hospital Dr R.S. Sodhi said the eye-care centre had been renovated and upgraded with latest equipment.

Earlier, BBS Sobti introduced the chief guest and Dr Neelam Sodhi traced the history of the institution.

Others present at the function were SPS Grover, district governor, Rotary district 3070 and Bakshi Mohinder Singh, chairman of GTB Hospital Trust.

Diabetics advised to change dietary habits, lifestyle

More than 250 patients were examined at a free diabetes detection camp, organised by the National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA) at Shivpuri, here yesterday. Some 124 patients, found to be having high blood sugar level, were further investigated for blood pressure, urine for micral test, body fat mass and BMI to evaluate any complications.

Dr Ramanbir Singh, senior consultant in endocrinology, led the team of NIMA doctors comprising Dr Surendra Gupta, Dr Rajesh Thaper, secretary and president respectively of NIMA, Dr Inder Sharma, Dr Sarjivan Sharma, Dr K.K. Sharma, Dr K.K. Kharbanda, Dr Diwaker Sharma, Dr Sanjiv Jain and Dr Ranbir Singh at the camp.

Those attending the camp, were provided free computerised neuropathy check-up to detect any nerve conduction defects.

Dr Ramanbir Singh, while interacting with the patients, advised them to follow the dietary guidelines, lifestyle changes and medicines prescribed by their doctor to avoid complications.

Meanwhile, the Atam Lakshmi Mandal organised a two-day free eye check-up camp at Lord Mahavira Homeopathic College and Hospital in which over 200 patients were examined.

A team of doctors and supporting staff, led by Dr Manoj Gupta and Dr Manju Gupta conducted the check-up and rendered follow up advice.

The camp was inaugurated by Veena Jain, president of the Aradhana Jain Yuvti Mandal.

LBA lads emerge champs

Sachin Malhotra and Jesjit Singh, trainees of the Ludhiana Badminton Academy (LBA), emerged winners in the doubles (boys u-10) in the Punjab State Badminton Championship held at Sangrur, recently. Another player of the academy, Anand Tiwari, in association with Bob Sharma of Patiala won the doubles title in the u-16 years category.

In the final, Sachin and Jesjit came out triumphant over Vinayak and Sushant in straight sets 21-16, 21-11. In the singles final, it was between Sachin and Jesjit in which the former romped home victorious 21-17, 17-21 and 21-16.

In the u-16 years doubles final, Anand Tiwari and Bob Sharma faced a little challenge from their rivals, Abhinav and Aman of Jalandhar whom they drubbed easily 21-11 and 21-6. However, in the singles, Anand could not resist against Bob Sharma and lost the final 17-21 and 19-21.

On the basis of his performance, Anand Tiwari has been selected to represent Punjab in the national sub-junior badminton tournament to be held from October 11 to 15 at Dehradun. The players were honoured by the LBA at Shastri Hall here today. They were given mementoes in addition to cash prizes.

Arun Dhand, former world veteran champion and vice-chairman of the academy, along with MK Chopra and Anupam Kumaria, president and general secretary, respectively of the academy, were present on this occasion.

They praised the players and their coach, Mangat Rai Sharma, for bringing fame to the academy.

Haibowal government school enter final

Ludhiana, October 9
Munish (53 n.o.) and Gurdeep (40) enabled Government Senior Secondary School, Haibowal Khurd, to demolish Government Model Senior Secondary School, Punjab Agricultural University, by eight wickets in the PCA Boost Ludhiana District Inter-School Cricket Tournament for boys (u-17) being played at Bachan Singh Academy ground, Balloke near Haibowal Khurd, here today.

With this second win in a row, government school, Haibowal Khurd, entered the final. In the final, they will take on Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines.

Put into bat first, government school, PAU, scored 127 runs in 30.1 overs. The main contributors were Yovanjeet and Tushar who made 65 and 27 runs, respectively. Ashish scored 14.

For government school, Haibowal Khurd, Gurdeep Singh scalped four wickets for 34 runs while Baijnath and Vishwanath captured three and two wickets each, conceding 13 and 18 runs, respectively.

Haibowal government school made the required runs in 30.2 overs after losing just two wickets. Munish remained unbeaten on 53 while Gurdeep contributed 40 runs.

For the losers, Ashish and Aman shared one wicket each for 18 and 27 runs, respectively.

BVM, AS school set up title clash

Hosts Bhartiya Vidya Mandir, Kitchlu Nagar, and AS Modern School, Khanna, won their respective league encounters to set up the title clash in the Ludhiana Sahodaya Schools Complex Football Tournament being played here today.

Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School survived many anxious moments before romping home winners 6-5 against USPC Jain School, Chandigarh road. The tie was resolved via tie breaker. In their second match of the day, Bhartiya Vidya Mandir School pipped BCM Arya Model School, Chandigarh road, 2-0. Neeraj and Harkamal scored one goal each to help their team wrap up the issue.

AS Modern School, Khanna, too had to fight hard against Sant Kirpal Singh Sewa Panthi Public School, Neelon. Khanna lads won the verdict 5-4 in a tie breaker.

In another match, Sant Kirpal Singh Sewa Panthi Public School defeated Radha Vatika Senior Secondary School, Khanna 2-0.
