DRDO-PGI tie up to combat complex medical conditions
Chandigarh, October 10 The PGI doctors developed a few months ago the flow directed technique of crossing wire during angioplasty in complex legion resulting in reducing the complications to the negligible level and making the procedure fast. In fact a wide ranging scientific hand-shake recently took place between the PGI, Chandigarh and Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS), DRDO, Delhi, focusing on several niche areas of concern to the defence
forces.
The first such area is medical problems of the troops at high altitude. Recently an INMAS-PGI team of scientists and doctors visited Ladakh and upper Himachal and used portable ECHO as a diagnostic tool for the first time in more than 100 ITBP troops in this sector. Valuable data has been collected indicating that portable ECHO, which is as small as a briefcase, is the most suitable method to assess cardiac abnormalities associated with altitude sickness. New ECHO parameters are also being defined that shall help in assessing the beneficial effects of drugs being developed by DRDO to treat acute mountain sickness and pulmonary oedema. These problems are known to create serious morbidity and mortality issues at high altitude. This is the second time when a team of PGI clinicians has been involved in solving altitude related problems at Himalayas, which probably has the highest number of temporary and permanent hill residents in the world. The first one was a decade back when a team of cardiologists from the PGI was involved in discovering what is now known as sub-acute mountain sickness. Electric vaporisers’ effect on saturation and symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS) and higher altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPO) will also be studied. PGI will provide these vapourisers at check posts at extreme altitude from the project. During the pilot project it was found that electric vapourisers were of much help in avoiding AMS and HAPO. During the study the importance of slow eating and avoiding heavy meals and overeating will also be emphasised, as overeating lowers the blood saturation levels significantly at high altitude and precipitates AMS/HAPO symptoms. Another area of collaboration is the use of novel DRDO inhalation products like nano-salbutamol and other nano-particulate drugs in treating many cardio-pulmonary diseases at PGI, it was learnt. |
