Kids stage ‘High School Musical’

Walt Disney’s “High School Musical” was staged by the students of St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, to mark the 34th Founder’s Day, here today. S.K Setia, DPI, schools, presiding over the function.

As many as 500 students exhibited their talents to make the programme a success. Two more shows will be staged on Friday and Saturday. The chief guests for will be Dr H.S.Dhillon, principal, Yadavindra Public School, Mohali and Harold Carver, convener ICSE schools, Chandigarh region, and principal St Stephen’s School, Chandigarh.

Top honours for Sakshi

Chandigarh, October 11
A series of competitions marked the celebrations of the national postal week organised by the postal department here today. Sakshi of Tribune Model School, Sector 29, won the first prize in painting competition.

Pinki Pradhan of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, was awarded the second and Geetanjali of Government Model Senior School, Sector 8, won the third prize.

A quiz contest was also held. Sumit Taneja and Nalin Taneja of the Chandigarh Philatelic Club won first prize. Aanchal and Bhawna of Stepping Stone Model School, Sector 37, Vivek Sagar and Himanshu of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, won the second and third prizes. — TNS

Pak prof leaves for home

Mohali, October 11
Professor S.Tipu Sultan, president, Pakistan Society of Critical Care Medicine, was discharged from the Fortis Hospital after a complex and successful heart surgery here yesterday.

Professor Sultan had come to Chandigarh to attend a critical care conference organised by GMCH. He was rushed to the hospital on October 6 after he suddenly developed chest pain and choking. He was diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction.

As a special gesture of goodwill, Fortis Hospital performed the surgery completely free of cost. The normal cost of such a surgery would have been approximately Rs 5 lakh, a press release said.

Professor Sultan left for Karachi, his hometown, today.

Campus placement for 177 students

Mohali, October 11
As many as 177 students were given appointment letters at Rayat and Bahra Biotechnology Centre for excellence on the concluding day of the three-day pool campus recruitment drive carried out by Wipro today.

Attended by over 8,000 students from Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, UP, Chandigarh, Bangalore and Pune, as many as 3,600 students finally cleared the screening for the final rounds of interviews, which eventually had 1,350 students vying for the appointments. — OC

HC seeks status report on foeticide cases

Chandigarh, October 11
Taking up the matter regarding complaints pending under the PNDT Act and female foeticide, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked the states of Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to file status reports within four weeks regarding the results of their efforts aimed at correcting the adverse sex ratio.

The case will now come up for further hearing on November 29. The Bench, comprising Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Mahesh Grover, issued directions on a public interest litigation by advocate H.C. Arora.

He has sought the issuance of directions to the Government of India, along with Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to consider formulation of a policy for giving monetary rewards to those coming up with information on female foeticide.

Acquitted after 10 years

Chandigarh, October 11
A juvenile was acquitted today after 10 years by the newly formed Juvenile Justice Board. He had been accused of assault in 1997 and booked under Section 326 of the IPC. The juvenile was acquitted as the witnesses turned hostile.

A board member Dr Sangeeta Thind, a social worker, said, “Sadly, this boy was 14-year-old when the case was filed and now he is 23.

The board also disposed three more cases. Out of the three cases, two were acquitted while one was convicted.

Plea dismissed

Chandigarh, October 11
A local court today dismissed application of Amrita Randhawa, daughter-in-law of actor Dara Singh, seeking her share in the property of her husband Amrik Singh.
