Bid to smuggle drugs into jail
Ludhiana, October 11 The incident follows the incident two days ago when an inmate tried to smuggle tablets in a milk powder can. The jail authorities said they were shocked at today’s attempt. The accused had made a hollow in the root of the vegetable and filled the tablets. The cut portion was then glued on with an adhesive. Kala Singh, a former convict, was caught by the jail staff and handed over to the police. Sources said he was released from the jail about two weeks ago. He had developed links with an inmate, Balwinder Singh. The drugs were meant for Balwinder. He had come to meet him in the visitors’ room today. The drugs would have been smuggled successfully if a small portion of the upper crust of the vegetable had not fallen off when a jail guard was checking it. Kala Singh tried to run away, but he was overpowered. He has been booked under various Sections of the IPC. The jail authorities have sounded maximum vigil on the activities of visitors and the food items that they give to inmates. |

Panchayat hands over rape accused to police
Khanna, October 11 After fleeing from Rampur village where he had committed the crime, he took shelter at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib. He had dinner and spent the night there. Instead of going to his house, he then went to the house of his brother-in-law. As the panchayat of Rauni got to know that he was putting up in the neighbouring village, it decided to nab him and hand him over to the police. Panchayat members said after they got to know that he had committed such a heinous crime, they felt morally bound to take him to the police. The panchayat would also award him a suitable punishment. During interrogation, he confessed that he had taken the girl with him on the pretext of buying her some sweets from a local shop in Rampur. He took her to the fields and raped her. He admitted that when her condition got critical, he decided to throw her into a well. It was after 14 hours of the incident that labourers working at a brick-kiln heard her cries and rescued her. A case under Sections 376, 307 and 201 of the IPC had been registered against the accused by the Doraha police after the incident was reported by the victim’s parents. |

Infighting put before development
Ludhiana, October 11 The meeting did not mention gastroenteritis and dengue cases that have been reported from several areas. Nobody expressed concern over the issue though the media has been highlighting the cases for the past many days. The committee will comprise joint commissioner M.S. Kainth, mayor Hakam Singh Gyaspura, senior deputy mayor Pravin Bansal and leader of opposition of MC house, Prem Mittal. Though the media was kept away from the proceedings of the meeting, sources said chief parliamentary secretary Harish Rai Dhanda and Gyaspura decided on the committee members. Heavy police force had been deployed outside the MC office. Even a riot control team was there. Opposition councillors said it was for the first time in the history of the MC house that a riot control party had been deputed. Prem Mittal said they had come to demand several things for the city, but they did not get any time as the meeting seemed to concentrate on the room issue. Later, while talking to the media, he demanded that the F&CC committee and house tax committee should be constituted. The estimates should be passed for development projects sanctioned under the councillors’ quota. He expressed concern over the spread of gastroenteritis and dengue, and mixing of potable and contaminated water. He criticised the mayor for the heavy police deployment outside the MC. Councillors’ rooms exist in Zones A and C offices and an SAD councillor, who had been a strong contender for the post of mayor, had recently set up a room in the Zone B office. The mayor, who did not like the initiative taken by his rival, allegedly got the furniture thrown out and asked the MC staff to lock the room. Resentment among a faction of Akali councillors forced the mayor to call for an all-party meet today. Development issues were not discussed as the ‘‘ego clash” got all attention. Even the F&CC committee has not been constituted yet and all projects are lying pending for want of approval. |

Invoking Gods to keep the wall clean
Ludhiana, October 11 In a city where most walls carry slogans like “Don't urinate here” or “See, a dog is urinating here”, residents have achieved what the slogans could not. In the process, they have also got rid of people who used to dump garbage near the wall. “It took me almost 20 days to clear the garbage and white-wash the wall to paste these pictures. Residents take care of the pictures. Our aim was to tell those soiling the wall to respect civic rules,” Ashwani Kumar, who lives near to the school, said. “Earlier, the management of a local temple had objected to the pasting of religious pictures on the wall, but when they saw that we take due care, it supported us. In the beginning, we had to shoo away rickshaw-pullers and migrant labourers, but now no one dares litter the place or urinate,” Babu Lal, who works as a gate keeper in a house near the school, said. Earlier, the badly stained wall would present an ugly picture, but now says Vaibha Khullar, another resident, “I have never seen the wall so clean. It was nearly impossible to play in the nearby park as the stench was awful.” He said residents of neighbhouring colonies were also excited at the innovative idea and were planning to follow it to keep the walls of their colony clean. |
