Twenty20 win buoys up Punjab lads
Mohali, October 12 “No one had ever hoped that the young Indian squad would clinch the World Cup when they started the mission. The victory is a real motivation for our team, which consists mostly of new faces,” said Punjab Ranji coach Gursharan Singh during a training camp which is underway at the PCA Stadium, here. “Undoubtedly, fielding so many new faces in the team is a great challenge in the first class cricket, but we all are taking it positively,” said the coach confidently. Recalling the feat of 1992 when the team won the trophy for the first time without fielding any star player except Navjot Sidhu, Gursharan said, “If we won that time without any star player, why can’t we win this time, that’s what I keep telling my players during the talk sessions,” said Gursharan. Skipper Pankaj Dharmani, too, seemed positive with the team. “The place, which has been vacated by some senior players who joined the ICL, has been filled by young Turks, who are equally talented. How are they going to react under pressure is the only point that worries me. But I am sure, we stand good chance of putting up a better show,” said Dharmani. The team is toiling hard in the camp. “Everyday, we have training sessions, starting from 7 am to 12 pm. We stress on all departments of the game, including endurance, fielding, batting, strengthening and speed work. “Senior players, including Pankaj, Gagan, V.R.V. Singh and Ravneet Ricky are our guiding force. As we have to play five out of six matches in Punjab, it will be definitely advantageous for us,” said the coach. “Keep on trying and Chak de Punjab” is my guru mantra for the team,” summed up Gursharan. |
