Doctors trained in reviving newborn
Ludhiana, October 12 The workshop was conducted by the National Course Faculty of Neonatal Advanced Life Programme, which included DMC principal and professor of pediatrics Dr Daljit Singh and professor and head of pediatrics Dr Harmesh Singh Bains. According to Dr Bains, the course was based on the recommendation of neonatal resuscitation programme guidelines, framed by the American Academy of Paediatrics. “It is an educational programme that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation.” The aim of the workshop was to resuscitate a newborn by various steps, including initial steps, use of resuscitation devices for the PPV, chest compressions, endotracheal intubation and medications. The workshop provided basic education and skills to prevent birth asphyxia (inability to breathe at birth), which accounted for 19 per cent of the approximately five million neonatal deaths occurring each year worldwide, Dr Bains said. |

Conclave on colorectal surgery
Ludhiana, October 12 Delegates from home and abroad will focus on modern surgical management of colorectal disease. The talks will emphasise on recent developments in the field and current areas of controversy. Dr Rajeev Kapoor, head of surgery, CMC, said many renowned international surgeons were expected to attend the conference. Among them, M.R.B. Keighley, regarded as father of colorectal surgery from the UK, will dwell upon the management of fecal incontinence and rectal cancer. Dr Jim Sweeney, president, Colorectal Surgery Society of Australia, will also be among guest faculty, along with Dr Jim Young, colorectal surgeon and head of surgery, Lyell Mcewin Hospital in Adelaide (Australia). Other guest speakers will include Dr Ian Roberts Thomson, director of gastroenterology and hepatology, Adelaide University, Australia, Dr Keith Hine, gastroenterologist from the UK, Dr Adam Lewis, colorectal surgeon from the UK, and Prof Micha Rabau, head of colorectal surgery from Tel Aviv University, Israel. Senior surgeons from various medical colleges from India, including Professor Wig, head of department of surgery at PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr Benjamin, in charge of colorectal surgery at CMC, Vellore, Professor Attri, head of surgery at Government Medical College, Chandigarh, will also share their experiences. Dr Kapoor said the institution had applied for accreditation for CME points for this conference from the Punjab Medical Council. A workshop on diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy will also be organised on the opening day, which will initiate doctors into the art of performing endoscopy. Dr John Abraham, CMC principal, said: “The lectures will cover all aspects of colonic and rectal cancer, ulcerative colitis and other diseases of the colon and rectum.” |

Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 11 Chairman of the Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology, Katani, Vijay Kumar Gupta, presided over the prize distribution function. According to school principal Kuldip Singh, boys of Shemrock Public high School had defeated those of KVM Senior Secondary School in final match played today and eves of Satluj Public School defeated girls of DAV Secondary School, Philaur. Boys and girls of the host team were declared runners-up. Girls of Radha Vatika School, Khanna, earlier displayed a good show. Appreciating the role of the management committees of the schools taking part in the tournament, Gupta said the trend would help in promoting sports in their institutes. “No college or a university can inculcate spirit of sportsmanship among its students unless they had performed at the school-level,” he pointed out after giving away prizes to the winners. |

Ludhiana,October 12 For her excellent performance at Sangrur, Steffi has been selected to represent the state in the forthcoming 21st Sub-Junior National Badminton Championship to held at Dehra Dun. Six other players from Ludhiana, Amit Bhasin of BCM Arya Model School, Chandigarh road, and Guranjan Singh of GGN School, Rose Garden, in the u-14 years category and Antarpreet Singh and Puneetinder Singh of Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, Bhavya Dawar of Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, and Gaurish Singla of DAV Public School, Bhai Randhri Singh Nagar, have also made their presence felt in the meet at Sangrur. They performed well to reach the quarterfinal stage. |
