Sacred Heart eves win

Sacred Heart Senior Secondary School-26, won the top honours in the girls’ u-19 category, beating Bal Bharti Public School, Pitampora, Delhi, 2-0 in the North Zone I CBSE Tennis Tournament today. The tournament is being played at Mount Carmel-47here.

Mehak and Harnoor of Sacred Heart beat Charuta (6-3, 6-2) and Pradhi (6-1, 6-0), respectively, to clinch the title.

Modern School, Barakhamba Road, Delhi, got the better of St Peter’s Secondary School-37, Chandigarh, 2-0 to remain third in the section. Madhulika and Divya won their respective matches for Modern School.

The semifinals and final in the u-19 boys’ group and final in the u-14 boys’ group will be played tomorrow at 9 am.

Mann, Sandhu in city golf team

I.P.S. Mann and Sandeep Sandhu have made it to the Chandigarh Golf Club team for the north zone regional final of the McDowell's Signature Club Golf Championship. The regional final will be played at the Noida Golf Club on October 15.

In the intra-club tournament, which is the first stage of the multi-city event, held at the Chandigarh Golf Club, here, Mann emerged the winner in the 0-8 category, tallying 32 stableford points while Sandhu came out as the runner-up with 31 stableford points.

Dilmik Lamba and Brig P.P.S. Dhillon, the winner and runner-up, respectively, in the 9-16 handicap category, joined the duo. Lamba scored 38 points while the runner-up aggregated 37 points. Also filling in the last two spots of the team were Col D.S. Sandhu and T.L. Verma, scoring 42 and 35 points, respectively, in the 17-24 category.

The McDowell's Signature Club Golf Championship 2007 will bring together over 4,500 golfers representing 30 top golf clubs from 22 cities across the country. The championship will culminate in the grand finale to be held at Phoenix Golf Course, Pattaya, Thailand, to decide the McDowell's Signature Champion Golf Club of India.

Meanwhile, Brig R.S. Kalha won the straightest drive (overall) and in a rare occurrence Sanjeev Talwar got a hole - in one on the 11th hole.

Besides, Chandigarh Golf Club, the northern region comprises of nine teams namely Noida Golf Club, Jaypee Greens (Greater Noida), Rambagh Golf Club (Jaipur), Ranjitgarh Golf Club (Ludhiana), Lucknow Golf Club, Golden Greens Resort (Gurgaon), Army Golf Club (Delhi), Panther Golf Club (Amritsar) and Classic Golf Club (Gurgaon).

Navdeep best archer

Navdeep of Panjab University garnered 320 points to clinch first place in the individual 30 metres (men) category during the All-India Inter-university Archery (Indian round) Men and Women Competitions held at PU grounds, here, today.

Ravinder Kumar of PU got 316 points to occupy the second place while the third place went to Raman Bhai of Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, with 315 points. In the individual 30 metres women’s category, Komal Katka of Pune University garnered 316 points to bag the first place while Th Ishembi Devi and Gitanjali of Manipur University, Canchipur, got the second and third positions, respectively.

Other results: Individual 50 meters (m): 1 Bhail Gharkiyabhai, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad (307 points), 2 Gurpreet, GNDU, Amritsar (301 points), 3 Raman Bhai R., Gujarat University, Ahmedabad (300 points); individual 50 meters (w): 1 Gagandeep, PU (299 points), 2 Gitanjali, Manipur University, Canchipur (297 points), 3 L. Shivam shines in Sanjay Public School win

With his fine knock of 77 runs, Shivam Khurana propelled Sanjay Public School, Sector 44, to thumping 143-run victory over DAV School, Sector 15, in the PCA-Boost Inter-school Cricket Tournament at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, today.

After winning the toss, Sanjay school decided to bat and scored 267 for the loss of six wickets in 40 overs. Anil Sihag and Naveen Dhiman contributed 57 and 31, 
respectively.

In reply, a fiery bowling spell by Gurinder restricted DAV on 124 all out in 28 overs.

Only Tanbir played a defiant knock of 29 runs whereas Rozal chipped in 18 runs. For Sanjay, Gurinder took four wickets, giving 22 and Rahul Chara claimed 3 for 17.

In the second match, Jaskaranbir Singh (60 n o) steered his team GNPS-36 to thrash St Anne’s School, Sector 32, by eight wickets at the GNPS grounds here.

Batting first, St Anne’s scored 93 all out in 27 overs. Viven and Shivang Sharma made 22 and 20 runs, respectively. Shivam, Hitesh Bhutani and Vivek snapped two wickets each.

GNPS achieved the target in just 18 overs, losing two wickets.

Mandeep bags gold

Mandeep Kaur bagged gold medal in the single scull event for girls during the Chandigarh State Junior Rowing Championship for Boys and Girls held at the Lake Club, here, yesterday.

Ravinder Singh emerged winner in the boys’ section. The second and third places went to Ravinder Jit and Sanjay Kumar, respectively.

Chandigarh Club clinch trophy

Chandigarh Club emerged winners in the senior boys roller hockey championship in the All-India Open Sardar Sewa Singh Johal Memorial Roller Skating Gold Cup Championship-2007. The event was held at the newly constructed rink of the Banyan Tree School in Sector 48, here today.

In the final, Chandigarh Club routed Blue Star Roller Skating Club by 16-5. Abhishek (6), Gaurav Raheja (4), Navdeep (3), Arjun Bajwa (2) and Amandeep Singh (1) were instrumental in the winners’ comfortable victory. For Blue Star Roller Skating Club, Gautam (2), Lovely (1), Babi (1) and Sunny (1) were the scorers.

In the senior girls’ category, Skateland Club blanked Green Grow School of Khanna by 4-0. Jyoti Kaushik contributed a fine brace for the winners. Gurleen and Sirjana contributed one goal each.

Balkirat of Chandigarh excelled in Under- 8 boys’ Quads Road Race. Nimish and Krishna Murti won silver and bronze medals, respectively.

In the inline road race category, Satinder Pal of Delhi won gold medal while Pankaj of Chandigarh and Arka Chatterjee of Delhi finished second and third, respectively.

VP Paul, former principal of CL DAV School, Panchkula, and the Chandigarh Olympic Association general secretary Ravinder Talwar distributed the prizes to the winners.

Arshdeep stars in YPS win

Mohali, October 14
Riding high on the century by Arshdeep, who hit 157 runs, Yadavindra Public School (YPS) crushed Gem Public School by 197 runs in the PCA-Boost Inter-school Cricket Tournament at the YPS grounds here today.

YPS, piled up 327 for 9 in 45 overs. Arshdeep virtually tore apart the bowling attack of Gem school. Kinder made valuable 50 runs followed by Aatish 31. For Gem, Sachin Sohal chipped in three wickets, conceding 49 runs.

Chasing the mammoth target, Gem gave up on 124 all out in 32 overs. Samandeep scored unbeaten 42 runs. Sachin Sohal hit 45 runs. Karanbir and Gurjinder took three wickets each for 19 and 17 runs, respectively.
