Sports gym turns slimming centre
Chandigarh, October 15 It has been learnt that influential persons are using the hi-tech gym at the cost of sportspersons. Besides, a few top officers and their family members often avail of the facility free of cost. The gym, which was set up by the Chandigarh Administration for players of the Chandigarh Hockey Academy and the Chandigarh Football Academy, was thrown open to the public on February 6 this year for a nominal fee of Rs 300. Due to this, sportspersons can avail of the gym from 6 to 7.30 am only on every alternate day while the public uses it from 7.30 to 10 am and 4 pm to 8 pm. “We have around 70 members on our rolls and several requests are on the waiting list,” an official said. This attitude of the authorities is disappointing sportspersons. “I don’t understand why players are not given preference. This is not a slimming
centre. The authorities should actually let sportspersons use the complex free of cost,” said national-level boxer Sanjay Kumar. Agreeing with him, state-level badminton player Nitisha said, “It is disgusting that the gym is being used by the general public, instead of sportspersons. In fact, the gym should be open for judo, wrestling and badminton players as well.” Interestingly, the sportspersons are ready to pay the membership fee if allowed to use the gym. When contacted,
I.S. Sandhu, director, Chandigarh sports, said, “To facilitate the public, we threw open the gym for them as well. But it is definitely meant for sportspersons first. All players who want to join the gym are welcome. I will soon look into the pending requests to see that sportspersons are given preference.” |
