PGI complex residents face water woes
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 17
Residents of the PGI residential complex have been facing shortage of water supply to their houses even as the PGI authorities have spent lakhs of rupees to address the problem.

The authorities had allocated the work to a contractor from Patiala against Rs 5,74,668 for constructing an underground water storage tank, setting up a booster pump and augmenting water supply line in PGI colony and making individual water connection to type I, II, B and C houses.

The residents alleged that the contractor did not provide water connection to 99 houses from the new pipeline that was laid.

The authorities neither penalised the contractor for negligence nor did anything to redress the problem even after repeated requests by residents, said Bal Krishan, general secretary of the PGI Residential Complex Welfare Society.

“Even those residing on the ground floor faced problem as their overhead tanks remained empty because of low water pressure,” said Karam Singh, a resident of type II quarters.

The inquiry into the matter was on, said superintending hospital engineer Ashok Shreedhar.

Govt accolades elude archers

Chandigarh, October 17
Lack of sponsorship has left deserving archers cheerless. In town to participate in the All-India Inter-university Archery Competition at PU, national and international archers -- Sandeep Kamboj, Gursantveer Singh, Kapil, Prayank, Manoj, Niva Kerketta and Rishitha Mandava -- are hoping that all this will change.

When the country was celebrating Yuvraj Singh’s sixes against England in the Twenty20 World Cup, the Indian archers team comprising Mangal Singh, Jayant Talukdar and Rahul Banerjee beat the Malaysian team to win the men’s recurve team gold at the Asian Archery Championship in China, but it went unnoticed.

“What to talk of honouring archers, there was hardly any news in papers or television. This is the way we treat the accomplishment of other sportspersons,” rued Sandeep Kamboj, twice gold medallist in junior national and bronze medallist in the 9th Junior World Cup in 2006.

“This reminds me... when Jayant Talukdaar won the FITA Meteksan Archery World Cup in Croatia in 2006, there was a single column news in a paper and the entire sports page was dedicated to Sania Mirza who had made it to the 65th rank,” Gursantveer, member of the team that got the fifth place in the 1st Asian Grand Prix Archery Championship, Thailand, said.

Despite bagging 12 gold medals and setting new records in national events, Manoj is still looking for sponsors.

Rishitha Mandava, an MBBS student, said: “As a professional, I want to be a doctor but as a sportsperson, I like only archery.”

Rishitha is two-time Asian gold medallist and silver medallist in the Junior World Championship - 2006.

Jharkhand girl Niva Kerketta is happy for Dhoni but not for the “step-motherly treatment” meted out to archery by the state government. “No one recognises me in my state, even though I am junior world silver medallist. But I am grateful to the Jharkhand Archery Association which provides us with equipment,” she said.

Kapil, Manoj and Prayank said it was very difficult to procure FITA-certified archery equipment which cost above Rs 1.5 lakh and there were very few sponsors for this sport.
