10 months gone, tennis courts await final rolling
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 18
Despite tall claims by the Chandigarh administration to complete pending projects, things seem to be moving at a snail’s pace.

The project of setting up tennis courts at the Sector 42 sports complex, here, is yet to see the light of the day despite repeated claims by the authorities for its early completion.

The work on the project started three years back. Then it came to a halt due to the administration’s rigmarole.

Though the final work has started, the authorities are clueless when it would be operational.

When contacted joint sports director J.P.S. Sidhu, his answer was the same as it was 10 months back: “Very soon”.

On January 25, this year, the official stated that everything had been settled and the courts would start within a week. “Hopefully, the inauguration of the courts would take place the next week as everything is ready except the final rolling,” said Sidhu then. But nothing happened.

Again on September 9 this year, almost similar reply came from the officer: “The work would be completed once the rainy season ends as the final rolling could not be undertaken during the rains.”

Even now, the work at the courts is on but at slow pace. “We have to lay the final layer of red soil,” said a worker at the site. After that, poles and other infrastructure have to be erected.

In 2003, the work came to halt when the engineering department realised that the expenditure on heavy
compacting after laying the brick layers was not sought while taking the administrative approval.
