Tension over fare for shifting paddy
Officials insist for Rs 400; truckers for Rs 2,600 per trip
Our Correspondent

Mandi Ahmedgarh, October 18
Tension prevailed at grain market at Kup and Falaund Khurad Purchase Center near here over the issue of wide gap between fare demanded by truck operators and that offered by PUNGRAIN authorities. However, the civil and police administration succeeded in avoiding unsavoury situation in the area.

Truck operators registered with the Dasmesh Truck Operators Union, Kup, commission agents, rice sheller owners and officials of state procurement agency PUNGRAIN locked horns over the issue of fare for shifting the paddy from Kup and Falaund purchase centers to various local rice shellers. While the officials insisted that the operators would be paid Rs 1.43 per bag (about Rs 400 per truck load) for shifting the paddy from centers to depots and shellers of the area, the operators demanded that they should be paid Rs 2,600 per trip.

Situation became tense when a few rice sheller owners and commission agents agreed to shift the stuff in trucks owned by them, yesterday. Truck operators turned hostile after two trucks were loaded and tractor trolley were called for the purpose. Drivers of the loaded trucks fled from the scene to avoid direct confrontation with the union activists.

Sangrur additional deputy commissioner Indu and DFSO Parveen Vij failed to defuse the situation and ultimately the trucks had to be unloaded late in the evening.Office-bearers of the associations concerned were called to the deputy commissioner’s office today but the talks proved futile.

According to Dalbir Singh, president of the union, the officials of PUNGRIAN had fixed fare for shifting paddy to local rice shellers. “While we have been receiving Rs 2,600 per round they insisted on paying Rs 1.43 per quintal (about Rs 400) per round. The officials instead of listening to our problem tried to exploit rice sheller owners for shifting the produce” said Dalbir Singh adding that two trucks were loaded forcibly.

Meanwhile, Chaman Lal Goel, press secretary of the Rice Sheller’s Association, accused the officials of the procurement agencies of harassing the rice sheller owners. He urged the higher authorities to intervene in the matter and insure judicious distribution and shifting of paddy.
