Family welfare camp today

Ludhiana, October 18
District family welfare officer Dr Rina Sandhu has said that the district administration will organise a family welfare camp at the local Civil Hospital tomorrow. Those coming forward for the non-scalpel vasectomy will get cash incentives of Rs 1,100 each and Rs 200 will be given to those motivating the people to opt for this procedure.

Doc attends workshop

Senior orthopedic surgeon at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital Dr Jagdip Madan attended a six-day spine workshop organised by the Bombay Orthopedic Society at Mumbai last week. He was one of 13 surgeons selected from all over India for undergoing this training programme.

DMCH gets PCR system

For the qualitative diagnosis of various bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic diseases, a fully automated real time “polymerase chain reaction” (PCR) system has been installed in the microbiology department of DMCH. Secretary of the managing society Prem Kumar Gupta inaugurated the facility.

GCW eves emerge champs

Ludhiana, October 18
Players of the sports wing of the Government College for women, Ludhiana, stamped their authority by winning Panjab University Inter- College Basketball Tournament held at Panjab University, Chandigarh.

In the league matches, Government College, Ludhiana, overpowered GGS College, Chandigarh, Dev Samaj College, Chandigarh, and Panjab University. And in the super league, they prevailed over the Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, 66-58 to romp home victorious and clinch the title.

The players of the winning team were honoured by the Ludhiana District Basketball Association (LDBA) at a function held at Guru Nanak Sports Complex here today. Vijay Chopra,Teja Singh Dhaliwal, vice-president and general secretary, respectively of LDBA, besides coaches were among others who were present to congratulate them. — OC

Harpreet sprints to victory

Ludhiana, October 18
Vice-chancellor Manjit Singh Kang inaugurated the PAU employees sports meet here today. Addressing the participants, he said for a sound mind, sound physique was a must.

In the 50-m sprint (women u-50), the first, second and third places were bagged by Harpreet Kaur, Jagwinder Kaur and Kamna Sharma, respectively, while in the above 50 years category these positions were won by Krishna Sharma, Usha and Kamaljeet Kaur, respectively in the annual Punjab Agricultural University Employees Sports Meet being held at the university.

In the men's section (u-50 years), Harpreet Singh emerged winner in the 100 m race while Des Raj finished runners up and Rajinder Singh secured third position. In the above 50 years category, Avtar Singh got the first place and Harchand Singh Pandher and Mehar Singh shared the second position while Gurmel Singh Saini had to content with third place. In addition to athletics, volleyball matches were also held.

Hockey trials today

Ludhiana, October 18
Trials to select the Ludhiana district hockey team (boys u-19) will be conducted at the Prithipal Singh Memorial Astro Turf Stadium at Punjab Agricultural University here tomorrow at 2.30 p.m.

SSP R.K.Jaiswal and district hockey association president said aspirants had been advised to bring their age proof certificates and report to Ajay Pal Singh Roomi, well before the scheduled time tomorrow.

The selected players will attend a three-week training camp prior to taking part in the Punjab State Hockey Championship slated to be held at Jalandhar, he added.
