250 vasectomies conducted 

Ludhiana, October 19
A two-day non-scalpel (without stiches) vasectomy camp, organised by the district health administration at Civil Hospital here today evoked huge response with 250 males coming forward for sterilisation.

Inaugurating the camp, civil surgeon Dr Sat Pal Sharma focused on the need for planned families while seeking participation of the men in the family welfare programme. He said the stitchless procedure was very simple, absolutely safe and required no hospital stay. He said such camps will be organised at government health institutions at other places in the district.

Dr Reena Sandhu, district family welfare officer, informed that under a special scheme, a cash incentive of Rs 1,100 was being offered to the volunteers undergoing NSV operation while the motivators will get Rs 200 for each case.

The mass media wing of the health department put up an impressive exhibition to propagate the message of family planning among the masses.

Dr Kuldip Kaur Sahni, senior medical officer of the hospital, was also present at the occasion. — OC

Sangrur Academy clinch hockey title

Ludhiana, October 19
Sangrur Academy beat Rail Coach Factory Sports Wing of Kapurthala 5-2 to clinch title in the eighth Rakshak Punjab Schools Hockey League at Mata Sahib Kaur Memorial Stadium of Jarkhar village, near here, yesterday.

The final was decided through penalty strokes as two sides were tied two-all at the end.

Shamsher Singh and Jagjit Singh scored one goal each for the Rail Coach Factory Sports Wing in the first session. Sumeet Singh of Sangrur Academy struck twice in the second half which levelled the score.

As the regular period failed to produce any result, penalty strokes were awarded, in which, Sangrur academy converted three of them while Kapuarthala lads failed to convert even a single stroke.

Earlier, in the semi-finals, Rail Coach Factory Sports Wing defeated Jarkhar academy 2-0 and Sangrur Academy routed Ludhiana 5-1 to enter the final.

Shamsher Singh of Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, was declared “ The Player of the Tournament” while Vakil Singh of Sangrur Academy was adjudged the best goalkeeper. Sumeet Singh of Sangrur Academy was declared the best full back and Sukhbir Singh of Rail Coach Factory was named the best half-back. Tejinder Singh Teji of Jarkhar academy was declared the best forward.

Football Tournament
LCET beat Chitkara institute

Ludhiana, October 19
The Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology, Katani Kalan, defeated Chitkara Engineering Institute, Rajpura, 2-1, in the opening match of the Punjab Technical University Inter-College Football Tournament which began at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College ground, Gill road, here today.

In other matches, Rayat and Bahra College, Ropar, outplayed RIMT, Mandi Gobindgarh, 2-0 while Shaheed Bagat Singh College, Ferozepur, blanked BGIET, Sangrur, 3-0.

LIT, Phagwara, thrashed Amar Shaheed Engineering Institute, Bela, 5-0 and Chitkara Engineering Institute, Rajpura, beat BIS Institute, Gagra, 2-0. GGS Institute, Karar, scored an easy 3-0 win over GTB College, Malout.

Dr Harkiran Kaur, principal of Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, inaugurated the tournament in which teams from fifty colleges are taking part.
