Mental disorder rife in poor families: Study
Arun Sharma
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 20
A random survey conducted on children coming to the institute for the mentally challenged in the city has found a relation between the disorder among children and poverty.

The study has revealed that a majority of children who suffer from mental disorders are from families that are socially and economically disadvantaged.

This turns into a vicious cycle as these families are unable to provide the care that is required due to lack of resources, which puts an additional burden on them as they end up incurring greater debts.

The survey conducted by a team led by joint director Dr B.S. Chavan of the State Resource Centre has found that a majority of the mentally challenged children belong to poor families and the mental disorder of their children further wipes out chances of these families ever coming out of poverty.

Over 70 per cent of 300 children coming to Government Institute for Mentally Challenged Children (GIMRC), Sector 32, were found to be from socially and economically weaker section of society, said Dr Chavan.

It was noticed that one of the common causes was poverty, due to which mothers could neither get nutritious diet before or during pregnancy nor get antenatal care. Infection went untreated in some expectant mothers. And deliveries were carried out at homes in slums or villages by midwives, said Dr Chavan.

Poverty leads to birth of mentally challenged children and mental retardation of children bogs them down financially even further, he added.

Though thousands of families have been facing the problem of rehabilitation of their mentally challenged children, many of them are in a pathetic condition as they have been taking care of more than one child suffering from mental disorder.

A visit to the families of these children revealed that parents were worried not only about the rehabilitation of children but also about the future of their children after them.

“There was a dire need for some creche or a care centre for such children,” said a mother at Sector 40, who has to take care of her two children with mental disorder.

“Who is going to take care of them after we die?” said Harnek, a resident of Sector 22. “I have three daughters and two of them are mentally challenged and in the meager income that I earn, it is not possible for me to afford some financial arrangement for their future,” rued Harnek. There are many children whose mothers are also suffering from mental disorder. Kharaiti Lal, a street hawker, has to take care of his two children and wife with mental disorder.

Suggesting steps to rehabilitate these families, Dr Chavan said in developed countries, families received adequate financial help to look after such children.

“There was a dire need here to provide substantial finances so that parents could get some relief in looking after these children,” he suggested.
