Youth Fest at SCD college concludes

Diamond Jubilee Zonal Youth Festival concluded at SCD Government College recently. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon was the chief guest while Vijay Dhanda was the guest of honour. DPI Colleges, Punjab, Dr Kanwarjit Singh, presided over the event and distributed prizes among the winners.

Principal S.C.D Government College Dr Malkiat Singh lauded the participants as well as the in charges of various colleges to make the event successful. More than 1,000 students of different colleges affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, took part in the zonal youth festival.

Talent hunt organised at DCE

Doraha College of Education organised a series of competitions to encourage talent in the students and teachers, in the college premises today.

Students participated in various fine arts, literary and dance competitions. In the debate held on the topic ' Has cricket killed other sports' Vandna bagged the first prize, Meera got the second prize while Seema was declared third. In elocution, Minakshi was declared first, Amarjit bagged the second prize and Jaspal & Shiffu were jointly declared third. In creative writing competitions Kanika Sharma, Meenakshi & Meera bagged the first prize in short story writing, essay writing and poem writing respectively.

In fine arts competitions Shiffu Kapila bagged the first prize in poster making, Pritpal Kaler bagged the first prize in collage making, Gaganpreet Kaur got the first prize for Rangoli while Amandeep got the first prize for Mehndi. In cross-stitch Navjot Kaur was declared first, Gurpreet Kaur got the first prize for embroidery (Bagh) and Satveer Kaur got the first prize for Crochet Work.

Navratras

Small Wounder Evening Club celebrated Navratra with the children today. The function began with typical Gujrati dance by the students which, was followed by various solo performances. A devotional group dance by the younger age group was also performed. Children made colourful rangolis, teachers narrated stories relating to Ramayana and made children aware of the importance of good over evil. A quiz was organised and questions relating Navratras and Dussehra.

Dussehra celebrated

The premises of Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, celebrated “Dussehra’. The celebrations were performed in two stages. In the first stage, different competitions like, Chopai Gayan and Mask Making and Poster making were held. The students of class X burnt an effigy of Ravana.

Dance competition

DAV Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, won the folk dance competition in All-India Mahatma Hans Raj Inter-zonal youth festival. DAV School, Jalandhar, won the rangoli making competition.

In painting, DAV School, Lawrence Road, Jalandhar, grabbed the first prize.

Top honours: Gobindgarh Public College, Alour, dominated the competitions during the Panjab University Zonal Youth Festival, Ludhiana Zone-A, held at SCD Government College, Ludhiana. The college bagged 22 positions in various competitions. Six items of the college have been selected for participation at Inter-Zonal Youth Festival, which is going to be held at DAV College, Abohar, from November 21 to 24.The college got first positions in classical dance, collage making, mehandi and pakhi designing. In mime competition, geet, classical music (vocal), clay modelling, crochet work, kali (individual), the college got second positions and in poster making, essay writing, debate, mimicry, quiz, knitting, cross-stitch, group song (individual) and mime (individual), the college captured the third positions.

Principal appointed

Dr Sushama Gupta, M.Sc ,Ph.D, has taken charge as principal of Government College, Karamsar, Rara Sahib, today.Dr Sushama Gupta had initially joined as lecturer at Government College, Amritsar, in the year 1976 from where she was transferred to Government College, Ludhiana in the year 1977.

Students apologise

The students of Hostel No.1 at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, who had indulged in destructive activities in the hostel premises on the night of September 24, 2007, while celebrating the victory of Indian Cricket 20-20 world cup, have tendered unconditional written apology today.

The students clashed with the hostel warden Dr J S Kang that night, following which, the Vice-Chancellor Dr M S Kang constituted an enquiry committee of Dr D S Brar (director students welfare) and Ramandeep Singh (deputy director sports) to look into this matter. In their letter, the students have apologised for their misbehaviour and assured that such incidences will not be repeated in future. They have also offered to pay compensation for the damage done to hostel property. The students have requested the Vice-Chancellor to close down the enquiry.

500 private school teachers await salary 
Urge govt to expedite payment

Disappointed over alleged unconcern of the state government towards their genuine demands private school teachers have urged the authorities to expedite payment of their salaries for past seven months.

What to talk of celebrating Dusshera and Diwali a few of them have to repay loans they had availed from their friends and relatives to enable their wards get admission in various institutes. Obligatory payments and premiums have also been delayed in their case.

According to Amrit Pal Garg, former president, Punjab State Private Aided School Teachers Association, staff of about 500 privately-aided schools had not been paid salary for the past seven months.

Though the state government had approved budget for full academic year commencing April 2007, the authorities had not sent grant for payment of salary after March 2007.

Referring to information received from teachers posted at schools of the area Garg divulged that a large number of them had to avail loans from their friends and relatives to enable their ward get admissions in colleges and schools.

They had to suffer on account of non-payment of obligatory expenses like insurance premiums and instalments of housing loans. Even the grocers and retailers have stopped giving them materials on credit.

Problems of the teachers stands compounded for those who honouring ban on tuitions do not teach at homes.

Kedar Nath Kapila, manager, MGMN Senior Secondary School, said the management committee had taken up matter with the education department. "However, we will try to help our teachers by giving advance against their salary so that they could bring up their families properly,” said Kapila.

New Sessions Judge inteacts with lawyers

District and Sessions Judge G.K.Rai today assured the legal fraternity of fullest cooperation. He was interacting with the city lawyers for the first time after taking charge as the Sessions Judge of Ludhiana.

He assured the young lawyers that the process of contruction of more than 230 chambers would be speeded up. He said it had come to his notice that the shifting of “malkhana” and it subsequent demolition was a impediment in the construction of chambers.

The matter would be taken up with the administration as well as the state government to sort out this problem, he added.

He further said if a lawyer had problem with any of his staff member or officer, the same should be brought to his notice. He would take necessary action. He expected cooperation from the legal fraternity to run the administration of justice smoothly.

Earlier, he was given a warm welcome by District Bar Association President Hemant Kalia, secretary Ravi Garewal, member, Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana Balwinder Goel, former DBA secretaries Rajneesh Gupta, Rana Harjasdeep Singh on his reaching at Bar room in district courts complex. The president of DBA shared the problems being faced by the lawyers.

Dussehra mela in Dugri

The Urban Estate Ram Lila Dussehra Committee, Dugri, will hold Dussehra celebrations in the Sabzi Mandi ground, Durgi Phase I, here tomorrow. BJP president Rajinder Bhandari will be the chief-guest while Kewal Krishan Gupta, chairman of Sawan Group of Industries, will preside over the mela.

Among guests would be Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, MP, Satpal Gosain, deputy speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha, Harish Rai Dhanda, chief parliamentary secretary, and Priyank Bharti, additional deputy commissioner, said Shiv Gupta, general secretary of the committee, in a press note issued, here, today.

INIFD students share fashion secrets

International Initute of Fashion Design (INIFD) presented "Fashion Unzipped", the annual designer contest to mark the passing out of its final year students at Club Nirvana here yesterday evening.The event was a much awaited one in the city and was witnessed by about 2,000 connoisseurs of good taste. The whole ambience was set in an artistic and dramatic manner starting with a unique design of the stage backdrop. The design capabilities of the students were showcased through a mega show consisting of 125 dresses, all based on innovative themes conceived by the budding designers themselves.

The dresses designed by the students clearly showed the effort put in by them in having the final collection on the stage. It reflected not only their design acumen but the amount of team effort put in by the students. Though,budding designers had different presentation, but they seemed to be revolving around the same theme.

The dresses were carried nicely by professional models from the national and international levels The show was choreographed by renowned personality Jeet Brar, who has choreographed more than 1000 shows in the past 15 years. It was well anchored by Pallab Bose.

The rounds were named as Egypt O Mania, Coco Loco, Zeene Tequilla Rewind, Tana Bana, Retro ParadiseWaris Shah, Manic Chic, Carnival Fest and Atoot Bandhan. The winning designers were Pooja Arora, Deepti Verma, Akanksha Dhanda,Ruchi Garg, Sandeep Kaur, Shahnawaz,Manpreet Kaur, Meena Kumari, Amita Aggarwal,, Baljinder Kaur, Kamaldeep Kaur,Saveena Suneja, Prabhjot Kaur, and Meenakshi. The award for the Most Innovative Round went tio Waaris Shah and the most creative round was Egypt O Mania.
