Sports, Amarjit clubs in quarterfinal

Fine batting performances by Salil (54) and Yogesh (43) went in vain as Salil Club lost to Sports Cricket Club by five wickets in the ongoing second Ludhiana District Twenty20 Cricket Tournament played at the Government Institute of Textile and Knitting, Rishi Nagar, here today.

With this win, Sports Club marched into the quarterfinal.

Salil Club won the toss and chose to bat first. In the stipulated 20 overs, they scored 143 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Salil made 54 with the help of seven boundaries and one six, while Yogesh scored 43. Palli contributed 24.

For Sports Club, Harpal captured two wickets for 30 runs, while Surinder and Sunny scalped one victim each for 17 and 23 runs, respectively.

Sports Club made the required runs in 12.3 overs, losing five wickets.

The architects of their win were Nishu and Minta Sood who scored 48 and 22 runs, respectively.

Nishu’s innings was studded with three sixes and four hits to the fence. Jeetu made 19 runs.

For Salil Club, Yogesh claimed two wickets for seven runs. Yogesh Mahajan and Rajan took one wicket each for 12 an 17 runs, respectively.

The second mach was played between Amarjit Club, Ludhiana, and United Club, Jagraon, in which the former romped home victorious by 38 runs and advanced into the quarterfinal.

Batting first, Amarjit Club were bowled out for 128 runs in 15 overs. Hippon top-scored with 52 runs, while Shakun and Tarun Passi made 14 and 12 runs, respectively.

For United Club, Chaman was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 31 runs.

Gurmeet, Harpreet and Gagan grabbed two wickets each, conceding 1, 16 and 23 runs, respectively.

In reply, United Club could muster only 90 runs, thus falling short of the target by 38 runs. Gagan made 26, followed by Chaman (17) and Sukhdeep (14).

For Amarjit Club, the successful bowlers were Varun Verma, Seeta and Lalit who took two wickets each, while Hippon claimed one wicket to help their team bowl out United Club for 90 runs.

Jasman, Navneet best athletes

Ludhiana, October 21
Jasman Singh Gill and Navneet Kaur,both Class IX students, were adjudged the best athletes among boys and girls u-17 years in the first annual sports meet of Amrit Indo-Canadian Academy held here yesterday.

In the u-14 years section, this honour was bagged by Jagdeep Singh and Amrit Kaur while Sarabjit Singh and Shehnaz Kaur Sidhu were named the best athletes in the Class IV and Class V categories.

The Baba Jhjhar Singh House bagged the Amrit Sports trophy and the Baba Ajit Singh House finished runners up.

Shivkartar shoots gold

Green Land school paddlers register win

Ludhiana, October 21
Host Green Land Senior Secondary School, G.T. Road, Jalandhar bypass branch, Ludhiana, began their campaign on a winning note in the CBSE Cluster XVI Table Tennis Tournament which started today. In the girl’s u-16 years group,Green Land School paddlers recorded an easy 3-0 win over Delhi Public School,Ludhiana.

In the boy’s u-16 years section,Ryan International School,Ludhiana, proved too good for their opponents, A.V.Public School, Fazilka, whom they blanked 3-0.

In the boy’s u-14 years category, LSDBRA, Fazilka, trounced BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana 3-0; D.N.Model School, Moga, routed Bhawan Public School,Amritsar 3-0 and G.P.S. beat State Public School 3-0.

Earlier, Hira Singh Gabria,minister, inaugurated the tournament in which about 400 students from schools of the Punjab-affiliated with the CBSE are taking part. He wished good luck to the participants.
