MCM football champs
Chandigarh, October 22 In the final between MCM DAV Club and St Stephen’s Club today shared points as both the teams held to a draw in goalless tie. Both the teams were tied with seven points. However, MCM DAV emerged victorious, as they have scored 11 goals and conceded one goal in three matches. On the other hand, St Stephen’s scored 9 goals and conceded one goal. MCM DAV defeated DAV Senior Secondary School Club-8 (3-1) and Carmel Convent (8-0) in the league matches whereas St Stephen’s got the better of Carmel Convent (8-0) and DAVSSS Club-8 (1-0). Earlier, both the teams squandered all the chances that came their way in the final match. DAV Senior Secondary School Club-8 finished third after beating Carmel Convent School, Sector 9 by 3-0. Kanchan (17th min), Kamla (20th min) and Neha (33rd min) scored one goal each for the winners. Sharika Kaul (Carmel Convent), Monika (DAVSSSC-8), Amanpreet Kaur (St Stephen's Club) and Nisha (MCM DAV Club) were declared the best players of the tournament. |

Cakewalk for St. John’s
Chandigarh, October 22 Batting first, the hosts set up a stiff target of 179 runs in 25 overs. Shine scored a half-century (51 runs off 40 balls) while skipper Vardaan contributed 38 runs. In reply, the D.C. Model team succumbed meekly for a paltry 26 runs. St John’s Aditya Duggal and Nikhil Banerjee gave good performances as they both claimed two wickets. In the second match of the day, YPS, Mohali team beat APJ, Kharar by 19 runs. YPS won the toss and chose to bat first. They put up a competitive total of 145 runs in 25 overs after losing six wickets. Subeer was the main scorer with 53 runs. The APJ team gave a good fight with an all-round performance by Saarthak, who scored magnificent 56 runs. He also claimed two wickets for 25 runs, but the team eventually fell short of the target by 20 runs. Earlier, the tournament was inaugurated by Kavita Das, principal, St. John's, and Brother Superior Sarto. R.K. Kaushik, secretary, political and protocol, was the guest of honour on the occasion. Chandigarh, October 22 Gaurav accumulated a total of 485 points while Neha bagged 435 points to win the honour. In Compound Girls event, Jasleen of Sacred Heart School, Sector 26 gathered 691 points and Varun Sachdeva got 890 points in boys’ category to clinch gold medals. Skating to success
Panchkula, October 22 Meet local youngster Rohit Bajaj, who has become a force to reckon with in the skating arena. “I was inspired to take to the sport after seeing one of my friends showing his skills on the wheels. Immediately I joined the skating coaching center at Blue Bird High School, Sector 16 under the supervision of Akash Deep Sharma”, said Rohit, a class XI student of KBDAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 7 Chandigarh. After that there was no looking back for him as in the very first year after taking to the sport, Rohit clinched a gold medal in Rink Race II and a bronze in Rink Race I events (U- 8-10 years) in the meet organised by a local club. “It was a morale boosting win as I again struck, representing Panchkula in the Shri Sushil Kumar Memorial Inter School Roller Skating Championship, organised by District Roller Skating Association, Karnal, in September the same year and won the gold medal there.” In December, 2001, he won the glittering metal in Rink Race II event of Haryana State Roller Skating Championship. Besides that he also bagged two gold and one bronze in the 7th Panchkula District Roller Skating Championship the same year. |
