Burns ward in private hospital

Mohali, October 26
Cosmo Hospital in Phase VIII here has set up a state-of-the-art burns ward to treat patients suffering from burn injuries.

Dr M.S. Sekhon, managing director of the hospital, said at a press conference here yesterday that the burns unit was set up according to the guidelines proposed by various international burn organisations. He claimed that it was the first burns unit in any private hospital in the region and consisted of six-bedded ICU with advanced ventilators, a fully-equipped burn operating theatre and 12 isolation rooms.

Bangalore’s Sharmila retains title

Defending champion Sharmila Nicolette showed her class as she fired two birdies on the return nine for a final aggregate of 307 to retain the Championship Bowl as also the Junior Shield of the 15th Realtech Punjab Open Ladies Amateur Golf Championship, which concluded on the par-72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club, here today.

The 16-year-old Bangalore girl played a steady game, barring a poor 80 in her second round. But this was enough for her to leave her nearest opponents Nalini Singh and Meher Atwal of Delhi seven strokes behind.

But the girl to watch out for is Meher. This 13-year-old Delhi girl gave a fright to her seniors as she trailed the leader by just three strokes on the penultimate day. That is the day Meher also clinched the under-14 title.

Sharmila played a bad front nine double-bogeying once and losing strokes three times. But in the final return nine, the champion fired birdies on the 12th and 13th. But two strokes later, she double-bogeyed for a par return nine. Nalini Singh played a par front nine, but played badly on the return nine for a 76 card.

Another Delhi girl who played well today was Shreya Ghei. After returning poor cards in the first three rounds, the 16-year-old fired two birdies as she finished with her best card of 77 to finish at the second spot in the nett results of the Junior Shield in the overall Championship Bowl she finished fifth at 322.

Akriti Singh of Amritsar, who started off well firing a 76 in the first round, wilted under pressure as also feverish conditions. She played her worst round today - a 17 over par 89 - to finish at sixth spot.

Kasavi Malik and Gursimar Badwal picked up gross and nett titles in the Bronze Plate and Challenge Bowl, respectively.

Mohali, October 26
Parsoon of Manav Mangal School, Panchkula, and Naina Saini of DAVPS-8, clinched the u-14 sub-junior boys’ and girls’ titles of the Sixth Manav Mangal Open Table Tennis Tournament. The tournament is being held at Manav Mangal Smart School, Phase X, here, today.

Parsoon, with his precise volleys and topspins, defeated Sahil of Patiala by 11-6, 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-4 in the final match. Naina Puri outclassed Kalyani of Manav Mangal, Chandigarh, by 12-10, 3-11, 11-4, 13-15, 11-9, 14-12 in the thrilling girls’ final.

The finals of the junior boys will be played between Dev Saini of Chandigarh and Munish Saini of Patiala. In the girls’ group, Kalyani of Manav Mangal, Chandigarh, will clash with Naina of DAVPS-8 for the title.

DAV-10 win by 8 wkts

An unbeaten century by Sumit Dhawan and fine bowling spell by Yugwinder (3 for 17) enabled DAV College-10 to beat GN Khalsa College, Abohar, by 8 wickets on the third day of the PU Inter-college Cricket Meet. The meet was held at PU, here, today.

Batting first, the GN Khalsa team piled up 192 runs in 42.4 overs. Parved and Harpreet contributed 54 and 48 runs, respectively. On the other hand, DAV bowlers proved to be too tough for the Khalsa team to handle. Besides, Yugwinder Siddharth Sharma claimed two wickets for 23 runs in five overs. In reply, the DAV team achieved the target in just 18 overs. They scored 195 runs for the loss of two wickets. While Sumit scored a century, Vishal’s 40 runs also proved valuable.

In another match, it was Simrat Bawa and Surinder who enabled SGGS College to beat PU Campus. Batting first, the PU team mustered 175 runs in 48.1 overs. Ashok and Gourav Tiyagi scored 39 and 20 runs, respectively, while the rest of the wickets fell quickly. In reply, SGGS’s Simrat scored an unbeaten 61 runs and Amit contributed 41. While Surinder took four wickets, Satnam claimed two. Ashim also claimed two wickets. The SGGS team won the match by six wickets.

Chandigarh register easy win

Host Chandigarh registered an easy eight-wicket win over Jharkhand in the under-15 National Twenty20 Cricket Championship being organised by the Chandigarh Twenty20 Cricket Association at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium, here, today.

Chandigarh scored 178 runs for 8 wickets. For the fifth wicket, the 75-run partnership between Shreshta and Shubam Rana proved valuable. Jharkhand were dismissed for 82. Rahul (3 for 12) and Gaurav (3 for 23) were the main wicket-takers for Chandigarh.

In another match, an unbeaten 104-run partnership between openers Devrath (60) and Gaurav Tandon (33) enabled the Association for Twenty20 Cricket (India) to have an effortless 10-wicket win over Goa. The match was played at the same venue.

In the third match of the day, Haryana beat Madhya Pradesh by 84 runs at the Punjab Engineering College ground in Sector 12, here. Madhya Pradesh won the toss and opted to field. Haryana posted 129 runs in 18.4 overs. Openers Anish Jain (17) and Abhishek Khatri (28) put on 35 runs for the opening wicket stand. Ashish Sharma (28), Amit Panchal (13), Ravi Kumar (15), Deepak Joon (13) were the other main batsmen for Haryana.

In reply, Madhya Pradesh were bundled out for 60 in 15.2 overs. Only Prashant (12) and Avinash Rai (11) could reach the double figure. Ravi Kumar (2 for 17), Kulshann (2 for 16), Deepak Joon (2 for 11) were the main bowlers for Haryana.

GGDSD-32 lift boxing title

GGDSD College, Sector 32, here, clinched the Panjab University Inter-college Boxing Championship 2007-08 by securing 34.5 points. The meet was held at PU’s gymnasium hall, here today. This is for the ninth time that the SD boxing team has clinched the title.

SGGS College, Sector 26, here, Government College, Hoshiarpur, and Gobindgarh Public College, Alour, secured the second, third and fourth positions, garnering 23.5, 14.0 and 10.5 points, respectively.

Sandeep of SD College came first in the light-fly weight category. The second place went to Mohan Singh Rana of SGGS College, Chandigarh.

Cricket trials from October 30

The third phase of selection trials to fill up the seats at the Chandigarh Cricket Academy will be held on October 30 and 31 at 9 am at the Sector 16 cricket stadium.

Boys born on or after January 1, 1993, with minimum height of 140 cms are eligible for the academy. Outstanding players will be given relaxation. Interested players should bring their date of birth certificate along with two passport size photographs.

Tournament

Satluj Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula, is going to organise the U-15 Cricket Tournament for school teams from October 30. Interested players can submit their entries at the school’s reception, latest by October 28. Players born on or after July 1, 1992, are eligible to participate in the tournament.
