Mohali, October 27 Top junior ranked player from Uttar Pradesh and Anshul's opponent in the men's singles as well as boys’ u-20 singles final was Rachit of Panjab University. In the men's singles final, Anshul took 39 minutes to dispose off Rachit’s challenge by 7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8. With forehand cross court shots and deadly reverse flicks, Anshul was comfortably placed at 3-1. Rachit bounced back into the game by winning the next two games. In the seventh and deciding game, Anshul completely dominated and maintained his pressure to win at 11-8. In the boys’ u-20 singles final, Anshul defeated Rachit 13-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 to complete his double victory. Manisha Sharma of Patiala defeated Nadia Saini of Guru Gobind Singh College by 11-8, 13-11, 9-11, 13-11, 14-12 in the women's singles final. In the girls’ u-20 final, Manisha accounted for Nadia Saini again 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 13-11, 11-8. D.S. Mangat, officer on special duty to Punjab Chief Minister, distributed the prizes. Manav Mangal director Sanjay Sardana informed that more than 300 boys and girls from various parts of the region participated in the tournament. Dhan Bahadur is best gymnast
Chandigarh, October 27 Besides winning first positions in the pommel horse, Roman rings, vaulting table, parallel bars, horizontal bars and floor exercises, Dhan Bahadur was adjudged the best all-around gymnast, by bagging seven golds. Hockey
Chandigarh, October 27 Dharamvir was awarded with a memento and a wristwatch for the accomplishment. The other nations, which participated in the championship, were Australia, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. Living up to expectations, the ace forward impressed everyone during all four matches that the team played. The team finished runners-up at the tournament. “Dharamvir was instrumental in making top class movements in all the matches, besides netting two crucial goals (one each against Malaysia and Singapore)”, said jubilant coach Jasbir Bajwa. Talking to The Tribune, Dharamvir said, “I am satisfied with my performance. Now, I will work hard to make it to the senior national team”. Rupinder Singh and Harman, the other players of the academy, also played well during the championship. Rupinder netted four goals, while Harman scored one. The team drubbed Pakistan 3-2 in the semifinals but lost to Australia by 1-2 in the finals. Earlier, Dharamveer was also part of the u-18 Indian Hockey team in the Four-Nation International Challenge Tournament held at Singapore. |

Shivam leads Vivek High to victory
Chandigarh, October 27 Batting first, YPS put on a total of 120 runs in the stipulated 25 overs. Subeer Hayer was the top scorer for YPS with 25 runs. Shivam Bhambri tore apart the batting line up of YPS with his clinical bowling spell, finishing four wickets for 21 runs. In reply, Vivek achieved the target in 19.5 overs. Shivam Bhambri hit unbeaten 63. Karan Khosla contributed 34 runs. Guru Harkrishan Model team was scratched from the tournament for fielding overaged players. |

Naman is snooker champ
Panchkula, October 27 The inaugural match was played between Karan Dhir and Ankit Goel. The former beat Ankit Goel 2-0. In the first frame, Goel was leading but Dhir fought back to win. The second frame was a see-saw battle but luck was with Dhir as he got easy black ball to end the frame as well as the match. |
