Anshul, Manisha clinch twin titles

Anshul Garg of Railways and Manisha Sharma of Patiala claimed double titles each on the final day of the VI Manav Mangal Open Table Tennis Tournament. The meet was held at the multipurpose hall of Manav Mangal Smart School, Sector 64, here, today.

Top junior ranked player from Uttar Pradesh and Anshul's opponent in the men's singles as well as boys’ u-20 singles final was Rachit of Panjab University. In the men's singles final, Anshul took 39 minutes to dispose off Rachit’s challenge by 7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 12-10, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8.

With forehand cross court shots and deadly reverse flicks, Anshul was comfortably placed at 3-1. Rachit bounced back into the game by winning the next two games. In the seventh and deciding game, Anshul completely dominated and maintained his pressure to win at 11-8.

In the boys’ u-20 singles final, Anshul defeated Rachit 13-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 to complete his double victory.

Manisha Sharma of Patiala defeated Nadia Saini of Guru Gobind Singh College by 11-8, 13-11, 9-11, 13-11, 14-12 in the women's singles final. In the girls’ u-20 final, Manisha accounted for Nadia Saini again 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, 13-11, 11-8.

D.S. Mangat, officer on special duty to Punjab Chief Minister, distributed the prizes. Manav Mangal director Sanjay Sardana informed that more than 300 boys and girls from various parts of the region participated in the tournament.

Dhan Bahadur is best gymnast

Dhan Bahadur of Guru Harkrishan Public School made a clean sweep by winning gold medals in all apparatus competitions for junior boys in the 34th Chandigarh State Gymnastic Championship for sub-juniors, juniors and seniors at the Sector 7 Sports Complex here, today.

Besides winning first positions in the pommel horse, Roman rings, vaulting table, parallel bars, horizontal bars and floor exercises, Dhan Bahadur was adjudged the best all-around gymnast, by bagging seven golds.

Results: Artistic: Junior group (Boys): Pommel horse: 1 Dhan Bahadur (Guru Harkirishan Public School), 2 Lalit Bhandari (Government Model Senior Secondary School) and 3 Karan Kashyap (Shivalik Public School-41).

Hockey
Dharamvir proves mettle

Local striker Dharamvir, a player of the Chandigarh Hockey Academy, Sector 42, won the ‘Best Player of the Tournament’ award at the six-nation Singapore International Hockey Challenge tournament that concluded at Singapore last week.

Dharamvir was awarded with a memento and a wristwatch for the accomplishment. The other nations, which participated in the championship, were Australia, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

Living up to expectations, the ace forward impressed everyone during all four matches that the team played. The team finished runners-up at the tournament.

“Dharamvir was instrumental in making top class movements in all the matches, besides netting two crucial goals (one each against Malaysia and Singapore)”, said jubilant coach Jasbir Bajwa.

Talking to The Tribune, Dharamvir said, “I am satisfied with my performance. Now, I will work hard to make it to the senior national team”.

Rupinder Singh and Harman, the other players of the academy, also played well during the championship. Rupinder netted four goals, while Harman scored one.

The team drubbed Pakistan 3-2 in the semifinals but lost to Australia by 1-2 in the finals.

Earlier, Dharamveer was also part of the u-18 Indian Hockey team in the Four-Nation International Challenge Tournament held at Singapore.

Shivam leads Vivek High to victory

With his overall fine performance, Shivam Bhambri (63 n o and 4 for 21) propelled Vivek High School, Sector 38, to beat YPS, Mohali, by seven wickets to enter the semi-finals of the Blessed Edmund Rice Cricket Tournament being played at St. John's High School, Sector 26, here, today.

Batting first, YPS put on a total of 120 runs in the stipulated 25 overs. Subeer Hayer was the top scorer for YPS with 25 runs.

Shivam Bhambri tore apart the batting line up of YPS with his clinical bowling spell, finishing four wickets for 21 runs.

In reply, Vivek achieved the target in 19.5 overs. Shivam Bhambri hit unbeaten 63. Karan Khosla contributed 34 runs.

Guru Harkrishan Model team was scratched from the tournament for fielding overaged players.

Naman is snooker champ

Naman Nagpal beat Parmod Kumar 2-0 in the sub-junior snooker category in the Haryana State Sub-Junior, Junior and Senior Billiards and Snooker Championship-2007 that started at Haryana Billiards, Sector 11, here today.

The inaugural match was played between Karan Dhir and Ankit Goel. The former beat Ankit Goel 2-0.

In the first frame, Goel was leading but Dhir fought back to win. The second frame was a see-saw battle but luck was with Dhir as he got easy black ball to end the frame as well as the match.
