Scientific farming must for prosperity

Addressing the participants of the three-month training course for young farmers at Kairon Kisan Ghar on the PAU campus recently, the director of extension education, Dr N.S.Malhi, said farmers must follow scientific farming for profitability and prosperity.

The scientifically approved techniques, including seeds of new varieties, production and protection technologies, must be followed to carry out farming properly.

He said although Punjab agriculture was facing serious problems of ecological and economic nature, yet PAU was endeavouring to find out solutions.

He stressed that farmers must read the farm literature published by the university that provide them the much needed information about farming in simple languages.

PAU Kisan Club president, Pavittar Pal Singh Pangli, Dr Jaswinder Singh Bhalla and Dr J.L. Sharma also addressed the gathering.

The course coordinator Dr T.S. Riar proposed vote of thanks. Student representative of the farmers Raminder Pal Singh thanked the university for providing them with the much needed technical know how for progressive farming.

PAU approached to tackle wild animal menace?

Farmers hailing from the Kandi area of Punjab approached the PAU vice-chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang and other university authorities to impress upon the Punjab government for taking steps to deal with the menace caused by wild animals in Ropar and other Kandi areas of Punjab.

Harvinder Singh, a farmer from Kheri Salabatpur village, led a group of farmers to approach PAU for the redressal of their problem. He said wild boar and neel gaye create havoc in their fields sown with moong-bean, mash, sugarcane, potato, maize etc. They also endanger life of children and field workers.

They informed that in case a farmer attempts to kill the menace-mongering animal, the forest and wild life protection department bring them to book. The problem thus, remains unsolved. Farmers, who repose fullest confidence in PAU, pleaded the authorities to do something for their protection.

Dr N S Malhi, director of extension education, assured the farmers group that the matter will be brought to the notice of the financial commissioner (development) and other relevant departments for redressal of the problems.

He said till some step is taken at the government level, they could endeavour to protect themselves from the animals by scaring them away. For this, they could contact the zoology department of the university.

Doraha, October 27
The shabad gayan teams of Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Doraha, brought laurels to Doraha by winning the Zonal-Level Cultural and Literary Competition organised by the Punjab School Education Board for primary and middle classes at Dyal Public School, Ludhiana, this week.

As many as 10 teams from various districts of Punjab took part in the competition. In the music competition (primary level) Sri GuruHarkrishan Public School, won the first position.

Similarly, the team of the school bagged second position in the competition organised for middle classes.

Both the teams shall now represent Ludhiana zone at the state-level competitions to be held in November. These teams have already qualified in district-level competitions organised recently.

Col RK Sharma, principal of the school, congratulated the students and music teacher Harjinder Kaur for their performance.

Preparatory engineering test held

Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology (LCET) conducted a “Preparatory Engineering Test I” for the students of 10+2 (Non-medical) at its campus today.

More than 500 students and 25 faculty members from different schools of the city participated. The test consisted of 120 multiple-choice questions divided into three sections viz. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with 40 questions each.

The test was prepared on the pattern of IIT-JEE/AIEEE/CET and was framed by a number of academicians and experts in the science field.

The students of Guru Nanak Public School, BCM Sr. Sec. School, Tagore Public School, BVM Sr. Sec. School (Udham Singh Nagar), BVM Sr. Sec. School (Kitchlu Nagar), Guru Nanak International School, USPC Jain Public School, Baba Isher Singh Sr. Sec. School, Alpine International School, GGN Public School, Govt. Sr. Sec. School (Jandiali), Govt. Sr. Sec. Model School (PAU), Guru Nanak Model Sr. Sec. School (Doraha), Govt. Sr. Sec. School (Jawahar Camp-Boys), Nankana Sahib Public Sr. Sec. School (Kot Gangu Rai), Govt. Sr. Sec. School (Bhaini Sahib) participated in the test.
