Joint replacement is safe, says doc

Dr CV Ananthakrishnan, joint replacement surgeon from USA, who visited Christian Medical College and Hospital today delivered a lecture on joint-replacement and reconstruction surgery at a meeting of the Rotary Club of Ludhiana North.

An alumnus of CMC, from where graduated in 1967, Dr Ananthakrishnan moved to Canada and then the USA, where he received his orthopedic training. He holds a diploma of American Board of Orthopedic Surgery beside being a fellow of American College of Surgeons.

The visiting surgeon described in detail the mechanism of joint-replacement and the operation itself with an electronic presentation showing photographs. He mentioned the causes of joint problems and their remedy by surgery.

He said joint replacement was a very safe surgery; and its main indication being joint pain.

Earlier, these operations were performed in elderly people, but nowadays even younger patients seem to benefit from surgery, he remarked.

He also answered many queries from the members on the subject. Dr Bobby John, head of orthopedics at CMCH, and Dr Rawat were present during the meeting and they also interacted with the members of the club.

Dr Vijay Obed, president of the club, presented a memento to Dr Ananthakrishnan.

Free medical camp

Ludhiana, October 27
As part of its social welfare services, the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) today organised a free medical camp for the students of Government High School, Civil Lines, in association with the Lions Club of Ludhiana.

The camp was conducted by the pediatrics, eye and dental departments and more than 300 students were examined for various ailments.

The chief guest on the occasion was the chief parliamentary secretary Harish Rai Dhanda while Dr John Pramod, director of CMCH, along with other senior doctors, Dr Rajesh Paul and Dr Yashbir Dewan, was also present.

Besides the regular dental check-up, the students were given tips for daily oral health care such as rinsing the mouth after every meal and brushing the teeth before bed time to increase the life of their teeth.

The ophthalmology team comprising Dr Nitin Batra and Dr Amit Austin conducted the eyes check-up and prescribed medicines.

They also provided the eye sight power details and recommended spectacles to the students suffering from eye sight problems.

Dr Varinder Kumar and Dr Sanjeev Kumar from the pediatric department provided comprehensive general check-up of the children.

Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, won the overall trophies in the boys as well as girls sections of the Ludhiana Sahodaya Schools Complex Roller Skating Championship that concluded at Guru Nanak International Public School, Model Town, here, today.

In the boy’s section, Sacred Heart Convent School, Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar, and host Guru Nanak International Public School, Model Town, secured second and third positon, respectively.

In the girl’s section, Guru Nanak International Public School, Model Town, finished runners up while BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, secured third position.

G S Sarna, joint-secretary, Guru Nanak Education Trust, gave away prizes to the position holders.

Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, faced stiff challenge from Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna University, Garhwal, before overcoming 3-1 on the second day of the North Zone Inter-Varsity Lawn Tennis Tournament being held at the PAU Total Tennis Academy courts of the Punjab Agricultural University campus, here, today.

In the first match, Manav of GNDU lost to Pardeep to trail by 1-0. In the next match, Harmanbir Singh of GNDU drubbed Anuj to level the score one-all.

Then, GNDU pair of Manav and Harmanbir Singh got the better of Garhwal duo Anuj and Pardeep 8-0 and Manav blanked Anuj 8-0 to enable their team to wrap up the issue 3-1.

In the second match, Kurukshetra University beat Aligarh Muslim University 3-1 to advance into the next round.

KU’s Amardeep went down against Ashwani of Aligarh 3-8, however Shubham won against Ritesh 8-4 to square it up. Shubham and Gaurav outplayed Ritesh and Avinash 8-4 to gain the lead 2-1.

In the fourth match, Amardeep defeated Ritesh 8-4 which helped Kurukshetra University clich the issue 3-1.

Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi, got walk over against Gobind Ballabh Pant University, Pantnagar, while Kumaon University, Nainital, got a walk over against Lucknow University and Jammu University got walk over against Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Agra.

Dr Dulcah Singh Brar, director, students welfare, PAU, was the chief-guest. Ramandeep Singh, deputy-director, sports, PAU, and oganising secretary of the tournament committee, was also present.

B’ball league from Oct 30

The inaugural edition of the Punjab Schools Open Basketball League Championship for boys and girls (u-19) will be organised here at Guru Nanak Stadium from October 30 to November 2.

Rajdeep Singh Gill, president, Punjab Basketball Association, said eight teams in the boy’s section and five teams in the girl’s section had been invited 
to take part in this championship.

Teams in boy’s section include Everest Public Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, Sports School, Jalandhar, Dr Hari Singh Sewak Senior Secondary School, Kotkpura, Spring Dale Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, Buddha Dal Public School, Patiala, Government Senior Secondary School, Giddarbaha, BSF School, Jalandhar, and Government Multipurpose School, Ludhiana.

Five teams in the girl’s section are Government Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, Government Senior Secondary School, Gurdaspur, LSD Government Senior Secondary School, Bassi Daulat Khan, Hoshiarpur, Hans Raj Pathsala, Kapurthala, and Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana.
