Mumbai, October 27
A city-based NGO, Citizens for Justice and Peace, headed by Teesta Setalvad, has filed an intervening application in the Supreme Court, asking for examination of evidence gathered by Tehelka in its recent sting operation. The application has been filed in relation to pending petitions seeking transfer of 2002 Gujarat riot cases outside the state.
“The application states that brazen admission and gloating by accused — who are roaming freely in Gujarat — that they killed and slaughtered and raped innocents, puts the lives of over 190 eye-witnesses and victims in grave danger” the NGO said in a press release here.
The National Human Rights Commission filed a plea in the apex court in 2003, asking for transfer of all major riot-related cases, including Naroda-Patia massacre and Godhra arson, outside Gujarat. Following which, the Supreme Court had stayed all these trials.
In this fresh intervening application, the NGO has said hearing on transfer pleas be expedited, and Tehelka evidence - which purportedly shows a BJP MLA and and a Shiv Sena worker confess to killing people from the minority community - be examined by the court with original CDs, in possession of Tehelka, being called for.
