Thousands of devotees paid obeisance to Sai Baba and Lord Shiva and listened to bhajans recited by religious singer Subhram Behal and his associates at a ‘Sai Sandya’ organised at MGMN Senior Secondary School, here, last night.

Many among the audience were seen dancing to his deeply devotional voice. Stories depicting miraculous powers of the deity were narrated.

Behal called upon the youth of the area to respect and serve their parents before finding solace at religious places.

He said religious functions were the only occasions where leaders of all political parties interacted with each other irrespective of political consideration.

“Contrary to common belief that the religion causes widening of gap among various communities and their leaders, including politicians, the ceremonies like sandhyas, jagrans and nagar kirtans bring people from all sections of society closer,” Behal said.

Ludhiana, October 28
Freezing the account of a customer without reason or prior notice has proved Punjab National Bank dear with the local Consumer Forum asking it to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation to the customer for harassment.

A.S. Narula, president of the forum and its members pronounced the order while deciding on the complaint filed by Amarjit Singh of Issa Nagar, Kharar.

The banker had frozen the account on the basis of a letter by the person who had put his signatures on the account opening form as ‘introducer’ that he had cancelled the introduction. No notice was served on the complainant before freezing the account.

The complainant stated that he had a savings account with the PNBank, BRS Nagar branch for the last two years.

On May 22, 2006, he withdrew Rs 2,500 through one of the branches in Sector 22, Chandigarh. On June 24, 2006 he presented a cheque (307691) for Rs 1,500 with the Shingaar Cinema road branch of the bank at Ludhiana. But his cheque was not encashed. He tried again, but his cheque was not honoured.

He was told that his account had been frozen. He made a written complaint to the branch manager on July 12, 2006, but no reply was sent to him.

But after appreciating the evidence on record, the consumer forum observed that the bank officials should have served notice upon the complainant before freezing his account.

Evidence produced by the banker showed the bank officials had not made any effort to verify the address of the complainant.
