Dental check-up camp organised

More than 800 school children were examined at a free dental check-up camp, organised jointly by civil defence, Ludhiana district.com and JCI Ludhiana city with the assistance of Christian Dental College (CDC) at Sacred Heart Convent School in Sahnewal yesterday.

A team of doctors, headed by Dr Vinay Madhvan, provided a comprehensive dental check-up to the students.

PAU, GNDU enter quarter-finals

On the third day of the North Zone Inter-University Lawn Tennis Tournament being held at the PAU Total Tennis Academy courts of the Punjab Agricultural University campus, host Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, along with Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, and Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi, romped home winners in their respective encounters in similar fashion (3-0) to book their places in the quarter-finals.

In the first match of the day, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, proved too good for their opponents Jammu University. Displaying fine control of ground shots and top spin service, Gurbir Singh of PAU put his side ahead with a comfortable 8-3 win over Abhik Gupta.

PAU’s Sukhmeet Singh proved his mettle against Lahir Aggarwal. Sukhmeet served well and exhibited serve and volley game with perfect control to trounce his rival 8-0 which enhanced the lead (2-0).

Sukhmeet and Gurbir combined well to oust Abhik and Karan 8-1 which saw their team to book a berth in the last-eight stage.

In the second match, Jamia Milia Islamia University, Delhi, overpowered Kumaon University, Nainital, 3-0. Khalid beat Manoj 8-2 and Yassir routed Vijay Kumar 8-0. Khalid and Yassir blanked Manoj and Vijay Kumar 8-0 to fashion JMIU’s easy win by 3-0.

The third match of the day was played between Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and CSJM University, Kanpur, in which the former came out triumphant 3-0. Manav defeated Zishan Ali 8-5 while Keshav Mahajan pipped Prateek 8-0 and the pair of Harmanbir Singh and Sunil Kumar prevailed over Zishan Ali and Prateek 8-4.

In the fourth match of the day, Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, recorded 3-0 win over Kurukshetra University to assure themselves a berth in the quarter-final. Vijay Bhardwaj outplayd Shubham 8-4, Bharat blanked Amardeep 8-0 and Bharat and Vijay outclassed Shubham and Gaurav, 8-5.

Cricket team for deaf selected

At the conclusion of the week-long coaching camp, a 15-member Punjab deaf cricket team has been selected to represent the state in the 4th National Cricket Tournament for the Deaf to be held at Lucknow from October 29 to November 4, according to Padam K Passi, general-secretary, Deaf Cricket Federation, Punjab.

The names of the selected players are: Munish Babbar, Arun Kumar, Rohit Kumar, Paramdeep Singh, Hitesh Soni, Satyanarayan Sharma, Karamdeep Singh, Riten Sood, Amit Narayan, Dilbagh Singh, Surinder Singh, Manu Kumar , Abhimanyu, Jaspreet Singh and Sunil Dutt.

Raman, Dalbir bowl out Malwa club

Fine batting performance by Pritpal Singh and an equally useful contribution with the ball by Raman and Dalbir Singh helped the Patwari Cricket Club to beat the Malwa Cricket Club by three wickets in the ongoing second Ludhiana District Twenty20 Cricket Tournament being played at Government Institute of Textile and Knitting, Rishi Nagar, here, today. With this win, Patwari Cricket Club marched into the quarter-final.

Batting first, Malwa Club made 104 runs in 16.5 overs. Sandeep top scored with 50 runs which included eight hits to the fence and one six. Pawan made 15 runs. For Patwari Club, Raman sent down four overs and claimed four wickets conceding 27 runs while Dalbir Singh grabbed three wickets for 10 runs in three overs.

Patwari Club achieved the target in 19 overs after losing seven wickets. Pritpal Singh made 36, followed by Gagan (26) and Vikas (19). For Malwa Club, Ashok Pandu was the pick of bowlers, taking five wickets for 18 runs in his quota of four overs. Sukhwinder and Ajay captured one wicket each for 18 and 22 runs, respectively.
