Paraplegic centre gets AC block
Chandigarh, October 29 Earlier, due to paucity of funds and space, the equipment was housed in four small rooms. The new block will facilitate easy and effective administering and monitoring of treatment procedures under one roof. The block was inaugurated by Lieut-Gen Daljeet Singh, GOC-in-C, Western Command, who also took this opportunity to bid adieu to PRC inmates, staff and their families on the eve of his superannuation. The concept of paraplegic rehabilitation centers was evolved in early seventies to rehabilitate those personnel who suffered spinal cord or other injuries resulting into a state of paraplegia or tetraplegia. The first such centre came up in 1974 at Kirkee and subsequently paraplegic home (North), now called PRC Mohali, was built in 1978. The centre provides facilities like medical treatment, physiotherapy, physical exercise, sports and computer training to enable patients to become self-supporting citizens. Stress is being laid on providing vocational training to inmates and their families to enable them to earn a decent living. They are being trained in cloth weaving, knitting, tailoring, candle making and wire brush making. |
